I'm using Capture One and having great fun with selective colouring. But I als want to be able to select and move an object (e.g. a tree) using something like 'quick select' in Elements. But I can't see how to do that.
Anyone got any clues as to whether C1 can do this?

No, you cannot move thing in C1. But I love the burning and dodging tools that let you do all sorts of adjustments.
Thanks for the update. At least I can stop looking for something that isn't there.
A real shame as I'd like it to select a complex area so I can then do things to it (for example, select a tree and then change the colour)

Both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop can do that.
The GIMP has many, many ways of selecting areas and also has layers and masking.
This one I converted to grayscale, inverted it, ran around the tree with 'free select', set all except the tree to black, then used 'threshold' to make a mask:
I hope one of the "many, many ways of selecting areas" using GIMP can select areas much better than the one used here. The masking in this 100% crop is poor at best and it misses a lot of the original tree.

Affinity Photo can do that. I don't do that very often but when I do use Affinity. Affinity is a poor raw convertor for XTrans so I do the conversion in C1 and export it to Affinity in 16 bit Tiff to finish up.
Your hope is correct. I only used one easy way and that in a quick and dirty manner. The image was a demo with no intent of perfection.
Ok, but that then implies that doing it properly using GIMP is not quick and simple.

I find luminosity masks are a much quicker and more efficient way to isolate elements like trees.
This is a quick luminosity mask of the tree in your image. It took me about 2 minutes to create.
The Refine Edge Tool and Refine Select Brush in PSE and Ps are amazing for fine tuning selections/masks when needed.
