What we are doing. And why.

Our site was originally structured to provide a home for DPR users when that site announced it was closing. But we always wanted to be more. When DPR was reborn, there was an opportunity to progress in the way we feel is useful to the photographer over and above discussions on gear. We are offering something different.
As the whole point of photography is to make photos, The Photo is going to concentrate on the images, more than the gear. We want to work together to improve not just our photo-taking skills but also our appreciation of images.

The Photo has a plan to reach out to potential new members.
Before we try it, we are asking for some help from you, the members. Can you contact all your friends who might be interested in what we are doing? If you wish, you could use the following as a starter or in its entirety.

You might be interested in having a look at a photography forum where I participate. There are plenty of other places that talk about gear. The Photo is trying something different. The starting point is a recognition that the whole point of cameras are the images they make. This site encourages in-depth discussion of how and why an image works. As well as members developing their photo-taking skills, the site aims at building everyone’s appreciation of images.

For example, a member can submit an image for critique. In return, the member is asked to provide critique for others. By sharing in the discussions, members work together to increase their photographic knowledge and skills.

The Photo wants to build responses that go beyond “likes”. The power of an image to draw on the response of the viewer is as much an indicator of the success of the photo as technical matters like sharpness. The technical is valued for what it contributes to the meaning conveyed.

You can check it out at the-photo.org. This is our new-user landing page and has links to the forum where you can register and join in. Once registered, please read here dprevived.com/t/important-information-for-newly-registered-users/7105/ to get you activated.

If you do discuss this with others and they register, if you tell me their username and email address, I will activate them without asking for any further information and then email them informing them that I've done that.
