Few years ago I was sometimes using such a software as Picture Window Pro (discontinued, although available for download), which had some nice options, particulary possibility to replace color profile for image files (of course you could convert images between color spaces too). From that time I recall seeing one simple graphics about color profiles and color management workflow, this image is available even today, on the www.normankoren.com/color_management_2.html:
I think this diagram nicely complements Bobs article.

About profiling/calibrating other devices at home - if you have a scanner available, you could start with profiling the scanner. For this IT8 targets are used, there are quite inexpensive targets available on www.targets.coloraid.de/ (at least I hope they are available, I discoverd that site many long years ago). I personally have not calibrated neither my scanner nor printer - I don't print images; calibrated monitor is enough good for my purposes.
