Man... this is like a bad episode of "nine-oh-two-one-oh" lol
Thatās my observation (from a distance, I havenāt signed up over there). It strikes me that his motivations are a little off - this place feels like a genuine attempt to keep the spirit of DPR alive in some form, whereas there seems more like an attempt to use DPRās death to his advantage and breath new life into his āphoto communityā project that already launched, and failed, some time ago (by the dates of some of the posts on those other forums).
I just got censured by the emperor again šš»

I bet you MAKO is reading all this and enjoying the attention.
Lots of fear and loathing here...competition is best...may the best site win!!
I signed up on both and will see which is better over several months.
Competition causes sites to innovate, and improve, and that is the best we must want, right? We are not communists, yea?
And why did DPR stop innovation many years ago? Because they lacked real competition..bingo!
I bet you MAKO is reading all this and enjoying the attention.

It wouldn't surprise me š
The membership there is growing slowlyā¦and word of the moderators behaviour is spreading. I will openly admit Iāve been a pain in the backside many times on DPReview as back then I suffered others ignorance with great impatience. I would not back down when I had evidence shared that showed the other to be incorrect. That was years ago and I care far less now and will just walk away from the discussion. My permanent banning came when I was fed up with a serial troll that had in excess of 20 user IDs that would start fights about cell phones being better than real dedicated cameras. Smaug got frustrated with me and a number of others, when we were saying that enough was enough and to do something. And he didā¦when I responded to the troll with yet another user IDā¦.I simply said āwelcome back.ā Smaug banned me and left the troll up to continue starting fights. And shockingly, a good half dozen of the trollās IDs got banned and removed. I think Smaug is a decent fellow who just got frustrated. Iām on his photography FB page now with no hard feelings. Some of the other mods donāt behave well at all.
The point of this post? Easy. The point is that I can make the post without being banned for discussing moderator behaviour. DPReview will not allow this freedom and instead uses a sledgehammer approach if you try. I truly think this is the page that will survive.
Actually, I agree. The reason for wanting to co-operate at the beginning was to avoid fragmenting efforts so that none achieved viability. Now we have more than 1500 members, there are lively discussions going on, and we are viable so long as we continue to progress and make this site better for its users. The problem with the behaviour was not the unwillingness to collaborate - that's fair enough - but presenting things as though we were the ones not collaborating. That wasn't honest.

I'm a member on the other site as well. Had a PM conversation with the Admin on there about a couple of posts. It was interesting and I have nothing against that forum. However I will go where I know a lot of the members and that's quite a few after 23 years and really, that's only one place at the moment.
Yes Dan I did see your post. It was interesting in how it was handled and also it was mentioned in a message. ;-) I'm a Kiwi, so I don't mind speaking out.
Danny.
G'Day Danny. I'm not happy at the treatment I got from moderators at DPR either. I put out a polite post to try to find others who might be interested in a forum base around honing critique skills. My posts were taken down and I have been banned for abuse. Abuse!! Best wishes to DPRevived. Doing a great job fellas.
You got banned Mike. You must be kidding me mate. Never seen a nasty thing in any of your posts over the many years. It's gone nuts Mike and I'm shocked at that with knowing you. Just hang around here or one of the other forums Mike. I've posted on the other site, but also had a few words, so this will be it here. They just need a bit of time to sort a few things out, but it's certainly going to be place to go and especially for a multi format user.
All the best Mike and I'm still truly shocked!
Danny.
I voted with my feet out of DPRforum a few days ago.
For Sigma/Foveon stuff. this site will be my main one when DPReview dies and RFF will be my secondary.
Got a link to that, please?
I joined both a few days ago, here and there.
Had some conversations with Dirk about the operation of the site, adding threaded views and that the max upload was 0.5 MB, could it be more. He said no to both, I need to adapt. Then I got banned for being a troll!
Iāve been using the internet from its birth and have never been accused of being a troll, and Iāve never been banned from anything before. Yet I was, after just 3 days over there! Glad in some ways, an efficient testing of a site and its administrator.
Anyway, onwards and upwards, here.
Like you..... I joined both. I haven't posted enough to be banned yet, so I will just see how things shake out. Right now, DPRevived looks like it is doing a better job, but time will tell. And to be brutally honest, no one can guarantee perfect moderation. Moderators are humans, and they can make mistakes, so you have to take the long view....
In any case I am thrilled that the DPR forums will not die. They will live on in one form or the other. And if they compete, then that is a good thing because competition always makes things better Personally, I hope BOTH these efforts succeed.
Marty
There are already 6 moderators on DPRforum, it's gone big š
I feel like the atmosphere will quickly look like DPReview
