It might be helpful if you were to clarify what "add your own" refers to. Add your own what? : o

That aside, I'd like to suggest two more items to add to your list:

    • Some support for emoticon/emoji insertion.
    • Ability to include numbered and bulleted lists inline within posts.

Let me try and summarise where I think we are going .

Dark mode - once we get themes working, that will lhappen.
Threaded mode - not sure - but I think it's coming.
Delete post button - that will come
Add your own - no idea what that is
Hide threads - there's a new layout in development which should allow a more granular approach.
Documentary and Street - Yes, I can do that for you. I'll sort that out before I go to bed.
Emoticons, bullets and numbers - as soon as we can get a full edirot included, that should happen.

Does that help? Remember, this is all early days in building what the customer wants rather than presenting something and say 'take it or leave it' - and we can't rush this.

    Cheers

    Alan

    Dear Alan,

Providing a "threaded view" is a very important feature in my opinion. This was once one of the main reasons I started using dpreview. Normally I don't like the typical "flat view" of forums, as I have to scroll a lot more to get the relevant information.

In contrast, a threaded mode allows me to choose which branch of a discussion I'd like to follow and which branches I'd like to ignore. It's my No. 1 time saver when participating in online discussions. I'm convinced that this feature alone was one of the success factors of the dpr forums, just as it still is for platforms like Reddit.

And I think it is not just the threaded view itself that is important, but the way it is implemented. Phil Askey got this right from the start and has done a better job than anyone else I've come across on the web in terms of switching between the flat view and the threaded view.

    Kind regards, Wulf

One thing that is MUCH better than the old DPR is that when you click on Threads at the top you see the latest postings. This means that the whole site becomes visible and you can have a look at interesting things in threads that you don't normally go to. DPR was very closed and closeted with little opportunity to interact aoutside one's circle of 'friends' . This opens up new possibilities (to me at least)

Am I correct in thinking that you are effectively using a content management system provided by the platform owners which then allows you to customise layout and features from a selection provided by them? That is, there are some requested features and affordances which you can’t provide because the platform doesn’t provide them?

My requests would be a ‘next unread’ button at the head of each thread and a ‘return to forum’ button at the bottom. Actually, repeating the breadcrumbs which appear at the top of the page would do it quite painlessly (I think…).

Posting from my phone while collecting my son from the airport (my wife is driving !!) this works OK in mobile mode.
Your thinking is a little askew. The site is hosted on a VPS which currently I'm paying for. I don't regard myself as the 'platform owner' - this is intended to be for and run by the community. That was one reason not to take an exiting 'instant' web platform, apart from anything else they are based on a dodgy software. This is running on Django, which is a widely used web framework, but not a CMS. There are CMS solutions running on Django, but we're not using one. We're using misago, which is a forum system. The 'problem' is that we've done no development work, because we needed to get the site up in a couple of weeks. What's needed now is a little patience. What will happen is whatever the community wants to happen, but we don't have a magic wand to do it in a flash. But we do have our own site, our own software and can do anything our ingenuity allows.

This is an important thing. This software is very different from DPReview. Some things about it are better. What would be ideal is to end up with the best of both

    1. Dark mode
    2. Dark background for "full-sized" images
    3. Does not accept complex email addresses during registration, i.e. serge.mail@mail.com
    4. I have to go through a VPN (not a problem), because addresses from Russia are blocked (the full functioning of the forum)

A rather sharper response than I was expecting. It was a simple request for information about whether there's a limit to the customisation which is possible - and your answer suggests that there isn't. I have been reading the high volume of requests for changes/features and was merely wondering whether, even with time and effort, some will be impossible to provide.

I'm not demanding any features in particular, nor do I want instant changes. I fully support your endeavours in building this site and I'm content to wait and see how it develops. I'm used to systems (such as Moodle) in which programmers develop a platform and provide a CMS to allow individuals to produce an implementation with their own look and feel but can't change the underlying code.
