We're a community run site with currently no source of income, so we need to depend on volunteers to do the urgent work to get this site to the state that everyone wants it. This thread is an invitation for people to volunteer - and my apologies to all those that already have - in the disorder your kind offer will be somewhere in a mess of over 6500 posts. So, this is an attempt to put some order into it.
    Skills we need
Web designer - graphic, html, css
Programmer - Javascript particularly react.js experience
Programmer - Python particularly Django experience
    Lawyer - UK jurisdiction
    Accountant - UK jurisdiction
    How to volunteer
By private thread to the member volunteer. Please put one of the above (Web designer, programmer, lawyer, accountant) as the title of the thread.
We'll be looking for others later, but this is what we need right now.
    Huge thanks in advance,
    Bob

Good stuff, however I am a little concerned that the url may be infringing on the trademark dpreview and that another name may be needed soon....

The trade mark 'DPReview' has lapsed, according to my check. I thinkj the violation would be quite a hard case for Amazon to make, in any case.

The trademark would in any case lapse after the service for which it was registered is closed. And if they don't close dpreview to retain the trademark then we wouldn't need this site anymore. Win-win :-)

As Amazon is sure not to close they may hold the trademark.
We well see what happens after April 10th.

Well, if they do come they send a 'cease and desist' first, then we just comply and make a news story out of it. Not a big issue.

it's just a couple of letters. Surely they couldn't win that fight. I don't think they would even bother. Had been different if the name had been spelled out, like digitalphotographyreviewrevived.com .😃

Hey, I just learned the news of what happened to DPReview today. Still couldn't process the information. This is tough. Been using the site for years. But I am really glad there are people already on the frontline trying to save DRPeview.

I am a junior backend developer based in US with experience in NodeJS, Django, SQL, and AWS(as ironic as it may sound as it is by Amazon). Please let me know how I can help.

I'm a React front-end developer, happy to help when I can find some time.

You cannot hold a trademark without use. It’s not the same as Copyright. If Apple stops selling products called “iPhone”, they’ll lose the iPhone trademark. That’s how Trademark works. You don’t get to claim Trademark on every work imaginable and then license it.

    Confirmed here:
Can a mark be cancelled for non-use? Yes it can, at any time. The challenger must show that use of the registered mark has been discontinued with intent not to resume use. Non-use for three consecutive years constitutes prima facie evidence of abandonment. The procedure for cancellation on the basis of non-use is the same as the procedure for cancellation on the basis of other grounds, and is similar to the process for oppositions.
What's less pleasant is that cancelling on this basis would involve going through a court case. I would guess that the publicised closure of DPReview would provide evidence of 'intent not to resume use'.

I'm a programmer, but not a good fit for your requirements. Work mostly with back end, .Net/C# and Oracle.
Let me know if there are anything I can do.

  • April 5, 2023, 9:11 p.m.

If you're happy to learn some new skills (good for your CV!) then there's plenty to do. If you can do .Net/C# then Python's a doddle. If you're happy with that, I'll put you on the team.

I have had some experience with designing and maintaining a website for a school that I built and rebuilt from scratch a few times. I became quite familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I also used to have my own photography website, which incorporated much of the same type of code. Please contact me if you think that knowledge might be of use to you.

Thanks, I'll put you in the volunteers list. Someone will contact you.
