EXIF Focal Length Format

In the EXIF that automatically appears under an uploaded image, I would prefer the order to be actual Focal Length followed by the 35mm equivalent, such ordering being more common on the web, IMO.

Personally, I dislike seeing the equivalent anywhere ... it's as if we can't think for ourselves and, for my 1.7 crop camera, it's often wrong anyway ...

I think the equivalent focal length is of considerably more use than the actual focal length. But showing both is fine.

I'm sure that many, especially old film shooters, will disagree with my view, Tom.

In the listings of EXIF that I have seen, the actual focal length is first, followed by the equivalent focal length. But I don't feel strongly about the order provided it is clear which is which.

I seem to be having difficulty making myself clear lately. Here is a screen shot which illustrates my problem:

although it could be deduced which is which if you happen to know the camera model and crop size, it is NOT CLEAR as to which is which - especially with parentheses used thus. I have NEVER seen focal length shown in that way and, at my age, learning new tricks like that is getting harder by the year.

Dare I even mention showing shutter speed as 1 over a value with a decimal point ...
... or expressing an f-number to two decimal places? Well, at least it didn't show f/4 as being a Douglas Phantom jet !!

Don't get me wrong, It is indeed laudable to show EXIF - but to get it so wrong makes us look like fools.

How about ISO 100, FL 16.6mm, Speed 1/30, F stop 4.0

Traditionally, the format is:

ISO 100, 28mm, 1/30, f/4.0

or without commas at all

ISO100 28mm 1/30 f/4.0

This is completely unambiguous, neat and concise. No need for the words "Speed." "stop," etc

Yes, something like that is very clear.

The exif data below can be formatted to whatever Admin want after it has been extracted from the image file.

Personally I would go with something like

f/4, 1/100s, ISO 200, 70mm (XXXmm eq.)

Apologies for being pedantic, but what the hell . . . It's f/4.0, not f/4.0. Note the italic f. That's part of the optic formula format. Elegance matters.

And it's "f/stop." Or "f/ stop." Not "f stop."

Italic f should be very easy for Admin to implement in the way exif data is displayed. It should be just a quick and easy CSS style addition.

I posted my preference for displaying camera settings in posts.
