    Flowers

Any flower - any camera brand - any time and place

    Orchid

To Mods, Team - can we set up Flowers section under Nature banner please. I am not into it 100%, but surely there is a number of members here who like flora and would enjoy seeing a dedicated section and would contribute occasionally I reckon. Just a suggestion. Thanks.

    Chris,

We only go one level deep, otherwise the root structure starts to look odd. However, if I get enough people (more than 10?) want it, I can create a separate forum just for flowers.

    So, who else wants it?

Fully understand the situation and appreciate your answer. Hopefully there will be some takers. Thank you kindly.

Although I don't have the stats, I'm pretty sure that most users browse only latest threads here and category does almost not matter. Consequently adding Flowers category would not make users post more flower images - IMO.

    But :)

If you (or someone other) would create thread like "Orchid of the month" or "Flower of the month - orchid" or simply "Flower of the month", maybe add there some rules - be it a competition or just a showcase (and maybe even ask Alan to pin that thread globally) - then I for sure would add some of my Phalaenopsis or other flower images. (There are not many of them, but enough to last for some months.) Can't vouch for others.

There's Landscape/Travel Photography and Nature/Wildlife Photography forums. I propose eliminating them and creating the following four categories:

    Travel:

    pbase.com/joemama/image/173944977/original.jpg

    Landscape:

    pbase.com/joemama/image/173945249/original.jpg

    Flora:

    20130126 -- 114850.jpg

    Fauna:

    20130330 -- 182412.jpg

I think this breakdown works really well from a website aesthetic, too, as it finishes the "rectangle" of forums for Photographic Genres.

Oh, by the way, how come the linked photos (the first two) are displayed in the post much larger than the uploaded photos (the last two)? Can't they be displayed the same size in the post?

    GB,

In response to the sizes, you have uploaded the images differently. I don't know what you did, but there's no underlying image on the first two, so I guess the s/w fits as best it can. The second two, it creates a thumbnail and the size is determined by some different code. I doubt we can fix that easily.

As to the idea - it sounds good, but what do I do with the existing posts?

I totally agree, simplicity wins from practical and navigational aspect.

Alan, I totally agree with GB, for simplicity reason as well as navigational aspect creation of 4 categories makes sense. You can just add a note at the end of existing forums to this effect and close them. People will figure it out to post in new areas.
Also, I could repost my last 3 entries under Flora to start the process, if that is possible. It's just a suggestion. I will however comply with any decision you will make

I appreciate all your efforts and see any improvement and ease of operation as a benefit to all.

    Thank you kindly

For the first two, you inserted just a link to the images on pbase which generated this code for the link to one of the first 2 images.

The other two were uploaded using the upload button in the post editor which generated this code for one of the last 2 images.

The software is set up to display the images differently in a post depending on how they are inserted in the post - link, upload button, [img] tags.

Yes, but only for when they are uploaded using a constant method.

Personally, I prefer using [img] tags which display the thumbnail images in a post the largest.

Below is your last image, which you uploaded using the editor's upload button, displayed using [img] tags. I wrapped the url to your uploaded image in your earlier post inside a pair of [img] tags.

Here it is displayed in the post much larger than the thumbnail in your earlier post.

There has to be an "undelying" image otherwise no image is displayed.

In the case of the first 2 photos the image is actually on the phase web server and not on the dprevived server.

The size of the displayed image in a post is set in the CSS code.

If someone in admin has access to the CSS code they might be able to find where the image sizes are set and adjust the size to suit.

  • Sept. 10, 2024, 11:30 a.m.

Yes and no - only maximal sizes are set. For images max-height is set to 500px and max-width to 100% [of post content] - they are scaled down when needed; as attached preview images have width of 500px and they usually are in landscape orientation, then they are not scaled.
Sure this behavior can be changed (probably not by adjusting single value - it has to work on different screens and on older browsers) - is it worth it, this I don't know.

I don't want to leave them there. I'd rather move the posts to the relevant new forums.

Let me see how much time I have in the next day or so and I'll see what I can do.

    Alan,

If and when time permits take whatever action you deem necessary to resolve this issue. Most appreciated and no rush, we can all wait. Thanks in advance.

I've created the 4 new forums and have (for now) set the two others to read-only.
