Actually I like some of those signs in titles - makes recognizing threads easier. Of course if every weekly thread starts to use some distinctive symbol pattern, then this will be worse than using just normal text as title.

It's a hangover from DPReview posts where they did need to draw attention to themselves.

    Hi,

Well, then, you aren't using nearly enough of those characters then! ;)

Thanks Alan. I'm glad to know the back linking will still work.

Sorry, I'm not picturing this. Could you provide a screenshot or a link to the example?

Just look at the text above. To me the "t" and the "!" conflict and it looks like "catl" whereas "cats!" is much cleaner.

Personally, I don't have a problem with Cat! as it is. I really think it's more a font issue. The original on DPR has a longer tail on the t, or more space between letters, creating a bigger gap between it and the ! However as long as the weekly thread titles can continue in their current form, I can live with the change, presumably on the shortcut button. Thanks.

Some ramblings about the new web icon.

I like it. I see the letters of The Photo although at first glance I thought it was some Greek character. After looking at it for a while, I decided it could be π⁰ - the Pi symbol with superscript 0 (Pi^0 or Pi raised to the 0th power). For those who did senior high maths, they may remember that anything raised to the 0th power equals 1 (one). One is complete, everything. I like it...

If that’s the only problem we have, we are in good shape! 😀

UPDATE: i was having difficulty finding the tab that belongs to dprevived. NOW I realise that Bryan was referring to a new favicon. It is too small for me to see on my iPad, and also highly undistinguished on the desktop. I am personally no good at identifying the meaning of icons, but the old one was better, whatever it was.

    Please replace this favicon.

By the way, this is probably a personal quirk of mine (I mean, what isn't?), but the word "image" doesn't sit well with me the way it is often used. For example, the "Showcase your images" forum -- it sounds awkward. I would rename it to "Showcase your photos". Not only does it sound a lot nicer to my ears, but it goes along with the site name a lot better. Same applies for "Weekly Topic and Image Threads" -- should be "Weekly Topic and Photo Threads". The "Have your photos critiqued" thread is, of course, properly named. 😁

The main header, "Image Discussions" is also awkward, but so is "Photo Discussions". Maybe "Discussions about Photos" would be better.

David, can you post a screenshot of the small icon? And what browser are you using?

    Hi,

Doesn't matter to me. If I am being technically correct, images come from electronic sources. However, I am fine with calling them photographs regardless of source.

I have problems with Images as well. I tend to use it though to avoid repeating the same word too often. Sometimes it avoids convoluted discussion about whether a picture is or isn't a photo.

I went right through the Forum Index page and made notes. I've done the same for the web/landing page and they will be in the next email.

                                           Forum Index..

Some posts are repeated too often. They are clogging things up and getting in the way of people finding what they need to find. Look at the top section of the Forum Index page. Welcome, Forum Guidelines and Introduce Yourself are all saying much the same thing and/or repeating posts. Example. Messages from new members should only appear once. Introduce yourself looks like the place.
“Welcome” needs just one item. A welcoming statement plus spelling out what we are about.
Forum Guidelines isn’t saying anything. It could link back to the Using Forums section on the web/landing page , or that information could be given again here.
“Introduce yourself” needs an introduction. We don’t need Forum Updates, and :we can now accept donations to be continually repeated.

We might need an “About Us” link in the top menu bar.

Image discussions. (On Forum Index page)
It includes posts on Forum matters that should be in the Site Discussions section further down the page.
The Weekly B&W thread intro isn’t needed here. It appears elsewhere and here it looks old.
We don’t need the Donations message here.

    Showcase your Images.
Very confusing. How/why is it different to Image Discussions? There are lots and lots of posts in both. If you were new to the site, where would you make a post?
We don’t needs, again, the same Forum Updates and Donation messages, at the beginning.

Have Your Photos critiqued. It has the same recurring not needed posts again.

Challenges. Apart from the same repeated not needed statement that begin Challenges, it look OK. An intro saying what Challenges is about would be good.

Weekly and Topic Image threads. If this is for the weekly threads..
It needs an intro about Weekly threads. If you are going to include other topics here, how does it differ from Image Discussions?

Other Photography Talk. OK apart from the repeating block of posts at the top.

Tech discussions OK apart from the repeating block of posts at the top. However, most of those posts look very old.

Photo trivia. OK apart from the repeating block of posts at the top. However, most of those posts look very old.

General Articles. OK apart from the repeating block of posts at the top. However, most of those posts look very old. However. I’d leave this for now. We need a discussion with the members broadly about Resources and we have enough on the plate that needs to be dealt with first.

Site Discussions, Updates, Bugs, Governance and Organisation. OK apart from the repeating block of posts at the top. This is where the site organisation discussion should be being held??

Miscellaneous Forums, Photo Hardware. Remove the repeating block of posts at the top. Lots of stuff in here should be in the Other Photography and Tech discussions categories above.

    Notes on the Web/Landing page

    Photo of the Week.
I think this should link direct to the Challenge forum, Photo of the week. Just like the Edit Me an image link is working.
Can the Photo at the top of the Web page be the winner from the previous week?

Become a member The link isn’t working.

Useful Web pages. OK for now. Eventually we need to discuss this with members.

    Mike,

I think you are missing how the forums work. Nothing has changed. It's always worked this way.

If you click on (for example) Image Discussions, you see all the posts in every forum underneath. That includes what's in "Showcase your images", "Have your photo criitiqued" etc. There is no duplication.

I can't alter this, it's the way Misago works.

There are three posts pinned to the top of every forum - soon to be two. One is my photo of the week and the other is a request for donations.

Fixed the link - it was still going to the dev2 site.

It is last weeks winner. What are you seeing?

Fixed. It was working, but just opened up some text. I've now changed it to point to some help on the forum
