This long-running thread started way back in 2009 on the original DPR site.
    We continue here on DPRevived.
    GUESS THE PLACE RULES
These are the rules for this continuing thread:
Someone will post a picture of a place on Earth in this thread.
The person who guesses where it is (with the approval of he/she who posts the picture) can then post a new image of somewhere on Earth. And so on.
Both the city/town/area and the country must be stated.
It doesn't matter if it's really hard but keep in mind that people must have a chance to guess it.
If nobody has guessed it after 48 hours, a new image may be posted by anyone.
If more than one person posts a picture, the first image is in play.
New images must be posted as replies to the original message and within 24 hours; otherwise there will be a free turn.
All makes of cameras are welcome.
Note: It’s advisable that photos be checked with both ’Google Lens’ and Google reverse image search before posting a new challenge – to avoid them being found immediately.

    Initial challenge:
What is this and where is it?

This might be easier than it appears.

It's a canon at Maungauika/North Head Historic Reserve, Auckland, New Zealand.

[Indeed it is Danno, the 'disappearing gun' at South Battery in Maungauika/North Head Historic Reserve, Auckland, NZ. The gun was designed to ‘disappear’ between shots and was built in 1886 at the Elswick Ordinance Works in England. To get that photo from the enclosed pit one needs to go along a dark narrow tunnel for some distance.
Disappearing-gun.jpgExterior shot here and over to you for the next challenge./quote]

I have no idea, but my immediate impression was Switzerland, but without snow :-)

Good try msabeln but not quite :-) This is in a significantly warmer country but yes, there is snow there in the mountains during winter.

This is fun, I am usually good at figuring out geographic locations, but this stumps me. The groves of what appear to be Pine Trees for harvest planted in separate plots are interesting. My first guess was new Zeland, but I don't think that's right. I'll be interested to see where this is.

Very nice try Roy and you are sort of on the right track but it isn't in New Zealand.
hmmmmmm.........it's difficult now to give any more clues without making the country fairly obvious.

What I can say though is that this photo was taken early-mid Spring (October) and there was no snow where I was standing but in Winter time this location is covered in snow.

Could we be looking down on a warm sounding valley, perhaps from an elevated bovine lookout location? :-)

that's very funny, i hadn't noticed a thread like this on the previous DPR platform.
I have no idea where in the southern hemisphere (guess) the picture was taken.
so I'm looking forward to the solution 😃

Is it Perisher Valley, Mt Kosciuszko National Park, NSW, Australia?

You're getting warm now. You have the correct country but not the correct state. It's in another of the eastern states.

Yes, it is a lookout location, not necessarily bovine :-)

Porepunkah, Victoria, on the way up to Bright... ;-)

oh dear....you're very warm now. It's not Porepunkah, but remember from my OP, the challenge is to identify where the photo was taken, not the location/town the location is overlooking.

Porepunkah is about 30-40 minutes drive from the location of where I took this photo. :-)

    Bullseye!!!!!!!

Well done Bryan :-) The photo is from one of the vantage points at and near the Mt Buffalo Chalet lookout.

Sounds like you might be a Victorian (Mt Buffalo is in the state of Victoria as a courtesy fyi for non-locals).

I'll hand the baton over to you now and look forward to your challenge :-)
