This is the first time that I have agreed with anything contributed here by DannoLeftForums, I am pleased to say that I find his thoughts very constructive and thank him for sharing them. 😀

I also agree that a short mission statement would be great (I would have liked to add something like that as a description for the dprevived flickr group I've created).

That being said I highly doubt it's a factor in getting new members on board.

Sorry for the late reply - sometimes life gets in the way (and I am busy over the weekend too).

I'm not sure we have a proper 'mission statement' and I don't know that, at the moment, we need one.

As I've said before, when we started, we were a home for the refugees from DPReview. Now we are not. So, we do need to set our direction and Bob has put messages out explaining where we hope to go.

For now, my role seems to be to re-organise the forums to reflect better what we want to look like. Forums we hope) will just be one part of the site - but we need to take slow steps to get to perfection (ha ha). If we can vaguely agree on the forum structure, that's one step in the right direction. [Another role is documentation - I am working on all that too].

As for numbers, to be honest, I'm not that bothered. I also run a motorcycle forum and we have nealy 1,000 members - but only about 30 participate on a regular basis (I think a lot more are in r/o mode). I consider that a success because the conversations we have are interesting, relevant and fun.

So, back to the forum layout. I'll leave the poll running for another couple of days and then I will reorganise dev3 to resemble what has been chosen (don't forget, at the moment it has 4 different options in there). You can all look at that and make comments and I can adjust things accordingly. If people don't comment, then they either accept it or they are leaving - either one is OK by me. Once that is done, I will make a small table showing which threads from existing forums will end up in the new forums. All will end up in date order, so if two or more existing forums end up in one new one, it could look a bit odd - but I think it will be OK.

Feel free to keep commenting here.

    Alan,

I cannot find four options in dev 3. Could you make them clearer, or explain here what you mean, please?

"Sigma" is not one size. They make/have made many different sizes, as have most other manufacturers.

A dilemma for you is in the heirarchy ... do you go sensor size/manufacturer/model or do you go manufacturer/sensor size/model or just manufacturer/model?

    I voted option 2 FWIW

Let me explain in my complicated way.
    -Everybody was in TURIN-

We all started to go to ROME.
-Everybody has a pretty good idea about WHY we were going to Rome
( go to see to Pope or the Colosseum - Panteon included )

No need to explain.... right ?

Now we are wandering ... Bob tell "It seems good to go to Milan"

    Hmmm , Ok.

    ?? what are we doing once we get to Milan ? ? ? ? ? ?

AlanSh tell us "Now we are going to Milan, I'll reorganize the Train Wagons so they will bring us BETTER to Milan"

    Hmmm, Fine.

?? what are we doing once in Milan and WHY ....
    W H Y to go to M I L A N ? ? ? ? ? ?

Now we reconvert to go to Milan, sure, interesting ..... MEH

    PS: What about VENICE ??

    Isn't Sigma fp family full-frame?
Don't say that Sigma fp is not real Sigma, because it has no Foveon/X3 sensor inside.

Sorry, IMO differentiating cameras by just sensor size does not make much sense (except for medium/large format, which is thing in itself), same goes for mount. What do you think, does anyone say "I'm proud APS-H sensor user" or "I've got new shiny Z-mount camera"?

If you don't see a need for a clearly defined and published mission statement that is your opinion to have but imo the lack of a mission statement facilitates admin and members pulling the site in different directions.

On current poll trends it seems whichever poll option you will end up going with, much more than 50% of the vote will have been for other options. That type of result is not ideal.

I'm not sure how that is meant to encourage existing members to stick around.

I suppose it's a bit like the moderation policy here on dprevived.

Only a few weeks into the life of dprevived I posted in pm's to admin and in the forums here that imo the moderation pendulum here has swung too far in the opposite direction from where it was at dpreview and that the likely consequences will be dprevived losing members they would prefer to keep. Other members have posted similar opinions in various threads.

Apart from dpreview now continuing I'm sure a significant part of the reason for the sharp fall off in member participation here is the moderation policy.

Maybe adapt the poll [and the dev site] to vote between the two highest scoring options [and maybe a 'I don't lie these']

    Sorry - I meant Dev2

Or perhaps use a preferential voting system but that would mean people posting their vote preferences and doing the count manually.

At least with a preferential voting system one option will eventually get at least 50% of the vote.

I am not very active forum member, but registered here from first days and check forum everyday.
I think, that any even small visible changes will be better for dprevived, give some dynamic and be more useful than giant posts about (Where we go from here or infinite discussion about forum structure).

  • July 31, 2023, 1:09 p.m.

From the poll, try3 was the winner. I will modify a dev environment to show the potential new layout and also work on which existing forum threads will end up in new ones (and then publish that for you to look at. You will be able to comment and suggest things then.

After that, maybe later this week or next week, I'll start moving things around.
