R8 is what I’m thinking of getting but …

    Here are my priorities:
    1. Fast prime - there is RF 16/2.8, 35/1.8, 50/1.8
    2. Zoom lens for vacation - there is …
    3. Birds (mostly sitting) - RF 100-400

I still would want RF 18-140 for example for vacation.

So it seems I’m all covered. I wish there was IBIS, but then there is R6 ii for much more dough.

Lack of mechanical shutter is a downer.

Just one lens for me, which is the 24-105 f/4 L. Great street lens and very sharp at all apertures. I have it waiting in its case for the R8, when it’s available. Super stoked for the combo.

I personally would not be worried about the fact that the R8 does not have full mechanical shutter. You do get EFCS which is mechanical shutter but there is only one curtain rather than two. This means what would have been the first curtain is electronic and then the final curtain is mechanical. It maintains most of the characteristics of dual mechanical shutter in terms of rolling shutter and dynamic range but with less chance of shutter shock and with some possibility of a slight effect in background blur. The background blur quality penalty is generally only visible with shutter speeds faster than 1/1000s and large apertures (F1.4 or 1.2). In that case you may see bokeh balls that appear to be truncated. When shooting candid people shots with the R5 and my RF85/1.2L I initially tried to switch between the two types of mechanical shutter but ultimately ended up just leaving it in EFCS and not worrying about the minor bokeh downside that sometimes exists because I preferred that to the risk of shutter shock at shutter speeds of 1/30 to 1/200s. With the R3 I now just leave it in full electronic mode for candid people shots since that body has almost no DR or rolling shutter penalty in ES.

I’m thinking about getting an R8 also. I have the Crane M2S compact gimbal so IS for smaller lenses should be fine. My lens choices in order of priority (highest first) would be:

    1. RF 16/2.8 - Great value. Good for vlogging.
    2. RF 35/1.8 - Arguably the best of the cheaper lenses.
    3. RF 24-105/4-7.1 - Affordable zoom with good reviews.
    4. RF 100-400/5.6-8 - Really need 600 mm or more for birds, but this lens is affordable and sufficiently sharp. Good for close birds and butterflies.
    5. RF 600/11 - Birds in good light

Now I just need to justify the purchase …

The 35mm is pretty awesome. I would add the 24 and 85 to the best of the affordables set. I also have the 24-105 and the super macro capability is pretty unique and fun to use.

One lens you also might consider in the RF 24-240mm, even with it's 10x zoom range it does deliver very good results.
My better half uses that lens on a regularly base when hiking with minimum gear (in her case an Eos RP and the RF 24-240mm)
And as mentioned by others the RF 35mm is a nice walk around lens with macro options.

    Similar R8 lens priorities here: 16mm, 24-105mm, 100-400 and an 800mm.

I'm looking forward to seeing R8 threads light up here on April 18 and soon after.
For the near term, I'll use my EF 24-105 F4/L IS USM and EF 16-35 F4/L IS USM with the EF to R adapter. A RF 100-400 was placed with the R8 order. Other lenses TBD.

    Hi

My first step in the Full Frame world will be with the R8 :
    - Canon R8 pre-ordered
    - Canon RF 24-105 f/4 purchased last month (with the promo)
    - Kingston Canvas React Plus Carte SD 128 Go
    - x2 Canon LP-E17 (Canon because I want to have the indication in the viewfinder)
Just waiting end of April ...

I still own several EF / EF-S lenses, I will use for sure with the adapter (with ring, pre-ordered)
    - EF 16-35 f/4
    - EF 70-200 f/4
    - EF-S 60 f/2,8 Macro

I still hesitate to buy the RF 50 f/1.8 or RF 35 f/1,8, but surely will wait to see what focal I will use the most

    Hi Zorg
I pre-ordered the R8 a few days ago so will likely have to wait a while (in Australia).

This will be my 3rd FF camera as I have the RP already. I traded my original 5 year old Sony A7 on the RP back in 2019.
At that time the basic ef-rf adapter was included and I purchased the 35 1.8.

The R8 pre-order includes the 50mm f1.8 so that will be my second RF lens.

I have a few EF lenses which I used with my my EOS M5 and EOS M6mii and a couple of Tamron zooms.

    Cheers
    Paul

So did you (or anyone else) receive their R8 yet?

Doesn't seem to be much discussion about the camera yet apart from some short YT vids.

I am still waiting for my (very) recent pre-order.

I checked with the dealer here in Sydney and one lot of orders went out and they are waiting for the next delivery in a week or 2 (and I should be in that lot).

First thing I want to find out is if my Tamron 100-400 performs satisfactorily otherwise I may have to get the RF 100-400 but I really want to get the 800 f11.

    I have the rf 35 1.8 and EF 50mm 1.8 (although the R8 includes the RF 50mm 1.8 as a bonus).

    Also have EF 85 1.8 and EF 24 2.8
I have used those on my RP along with my Tamron 35-150 f2.8-f4 which is a little slow but very nice images.

I already have the grip extender and plenty of spare LPE-17 batteries (from my 2 EOS M's)

So just need to camera when it's ready :-).

    Cheers
    Paul

    Still waiting for my R8.

No sign of it arriving anytime soon

I heard that Canon was having problems with parts availability for the R8.

I'm the meantime I picked up the 16mm 2.8 at a lower price.

If worse comes to worse I'll just use it on my RP.

    Cheers

So the body only still seems unavailable and no ETA on delivery.

So I cancelled my pre-order, called a nearby store and they had a lens kit which they were happy to separate.

Short story shorter, I have an R8.

One thing I noticed in ES is the warping effect between shots which I don't think happens on my xh2s (Fujifilm stacked sensor).

Will use it over the weekend and start learning the settings.

    Cheers
    Paul
