Most of us are very experienced photographers, and there are some people here who are exceptional engineers. There is a lot of knowledge and I respect the people here.

But the Beginner’s area here is way off the mark. A Beginner asks questions like, “Why are my photos blurry?” And you tell them, “Turn the knob from M to P,” and they’re SO HAPPY. Because that’s the answer they needed for what they’re doing.

Gentlemen, we are perhaps so far removed from the understanding of Beginning Photographers that we have lost touch with their thought process. I would LOVE to see DPRevived become the leading photography site on the Internet and I would LOVE to contribute to make that happen… but folks, we need to stop answering Beginner Questions with PhD dissertations.

    Totally agree with you! 👍🏻
Or why make it simple when you can make it complicated 😎

I agree - and have already had discussions with Bob about this. Changes are afoot.

Areas like BQ need teachers and mentors. I'm sure we've all had personal experiences with good and bad ones.

Whatever has been going on, I see improvement. We already have a good discussion going on in BQ about in-camera HDR.

    Please continue and thank you.

    Alan,
I also find that so many exposure-related discussions at DPReview and here completely ignore the most important part: LIGHT.

Beginner and many intermediate photographers don’t understand that great photographs have great lighting. When the quality of light hitting the subject is poor — too contrasty, for instance — it doesn’t matter how you spin the knobs and levers, the photo won’t be very good. Sure, we can get the best result possible, but we won’t get a great photo when the lighting itself is poor.

I just think this issue doesn’t get nearly enough attention when we describe exposure to beginner photographers.

lighting to contrasty is no good ? where did you come up with that idea 🙄

Maybe from the photos you post, who knows?

But most probably I think he means from the harsh natural outdoor lighting you can get at times on sunny days.

Your question has nothing at all to do with the op.

If you want to discuss the merits or otherwise of your images start your own thread in the appropriate forum on this site.

If I could kiss you, I would.

There are a LOT of extremely SMART folks on the internet who talk about “exposure” and “signal to noise ratios” and…… but when I take a peak at some of their images, I see “ducks swimming in a pond in flat light”. Sheesh. It may be perfectly exposed but sometimes all of us can get so hung up on the technical BS that we forget the important stuff: GOOD LIGHT (or good lighting technique), composition, and power.

Beginners want to know how to use their camera (regardless of type or brand) and have possibly never heard of the “golden hour”. So before we go around getting all technical, how about we start with the basics ….. and those basics include not denigrating someone with a smartphone and telling them to get a “real camera”.

I only started last week with a real camera. So this could be interesting.

What I think of that image has nothing at all to do with the original post.

Instead of trying to hijack this thread, start your own thread in the Critique board if you want people to discuss the merits or otherwise of your photos.

You seem to be afraid to do that and instead prefer to hijack other people's threads to get critiques on your photos.

Im a professional, my images are not up for critique you like them or you dont either way i dont care. my critique is getting paid for my images and sell around 1000 per year.

Given you have got so many things wrong on this forum so far, as proven by members in other threads, and you have deliberately, imo, falsified on at least 2 occssions what I have posted in your quotes, you give me no reason to believe what you say is true.

But even if it is and you are happy with your images then all well and good. And if you actually make some money from them even better. Just keep doing what works best for you.

But there are people here who are retired and no longer need to worry about making a living who are interested in getting into photography and creating images of higher quality than what is acceptable to you.

Instead of continuing to hijack other people's threads, start your own threads with your images for comments/critiques because your images here have nothing at all to do with the original post.

its a photography forum not a gear head forum like DPR. i like talking with my images not my keyboard, if you don't than that's your discission. But beginners would prefer seeing real world results, not just talk with the keyboard.

Don, I think we can all agree that you're more than a decent photographer. However, there was a time, that is going to be erased shortly, when, well, what you said and what you showed were, well, there's a reason you deleted the photos (www.dpreview.com/forums/post/58403383). I mean, you have to admit, that you and Nigel did quite the uno-reverse card!

But, let's just say that I'm of the opinion that, yes, the bottom line is the photo, but there's no reason not to be technically correct, and, ideally, understanding the technical should aid in getting a better photo.

I have posted many photos in my own threads on dpreview and some photos in my own threads here on dprevived. Feel free to comment on any of them in their respective threads.

Your hijacking of other people's threads with your images tells me you are afraid to post your images in your own threads for critique.

Your attempts to hijack other people's threads with your images come across to me as desperate attempts by an at best struggling photographer seeking some sort of recognition.

Your photos in this thread have nothing at all to do with the original post.
