The Exposure Triangle Is Misleading And Unnecessary.

There are beginners and professional photographers who actually do care about technical discussions.

If you are happy with your photos and are making some money from them, all well and good. Just continue doing what works best for you.

But what about happily retired beginners who don't need to worry about making a living anymore and so can just sit back and improve their knowledge and skills at their leisure to create images with a higher quality than what you seem to accept?

Since you are not interested in this thread it makes no sense why you are even participating in it, unless you are not one of the professional photographers making money you refer to 😜

Just joined this thread after 90 odd posts. I can't say the discussion has left me any more "illuminated".

Back in the ye olde days of digital, we were told that the ISO dial increases the amplification of the sensor making it more light sensitive. I think that I have gathered now that that is not quite true. I presume as it's there, it does something, else it's a waste of a control point and kind of undermines the Fuji dials approach.

If someone wouldn't mind summarising, when shooting raw, what does the iso dial actually do?

oh well, never mind. At least you'd be a good test dummy for the next upgrade then 😉

Hopefully the ISO For Beginners thread should explain ISO in simple terms. But I wouldn't go past the first dozen or so posts though.

same as it did 20 years ago, it hasnt changed . it just amplifies the pixel signal before the adc.

I think post processing software compounds the confusion.

Some PP software, including the products I use, have a control "Exposure". Of course it can't change the actual exposure, but it's easy to see why folks think it does.

The ISO dial still changes the digital gain of the ADC.

2) Practically speaking there is more leeway in post. But, yes, what about ISO invariant sensors? What was the intention behind this question as I don’t think this is related to the core of this discussion.

Currently, ISO setting may control the pixel capacitance, control amplification, control multiplication, force a tag controlling out-of-camera conversion, do nothing except forcing the tag.
