Sounds like what in more feudal times in Scandinavia was termed a "fideikomiss". Property that could not be sold, only inherited. (curerntly not legal according to the Norwegian constitution ). Apart from its immunity to takovers and property taxes (zero commercial value), it certainly was a beneficial construction for the owners.

In this case of a repository for knowledge and dialogue the structure seems ideal.

It's the usual way in England that clubs, societies, foundations and other associations for the common good of a community are formed.

    ...and Alan.
The real point was motivation. I didn't do what I did to become another Bezos or Musk. Something needed to be done and I saw myself as being in a position to do it. So did Alan - so we joined forces.

TOShooter’s comment was in relation to the apostrophe’s position - the ‘obvious’ they were referring to.

Any chance it could be changed? - it does rub in an awkward way, reminds me of English tests at school.

It was intentional, not a mistake. 'The photographer' is a generic photographer - this is intended to be a site for 'the photographer' - singular. It doesn't suggest ownership by a particular photographer.

when things have settled a bit here.
we might write a little "How it all began".
Have a screen shot about our first chat in dpreview.
Will make a good laugh sometime with an ale or two.

Arh I see, that changes everything, I got it. A community of individual photographers.
    Many thanks for the clarification.

If there is a UK bank account, I would prefer to bypass Paypal and do a direct transfer. Please make both options available. (I do have some cheques somewhere, but the mice might have finished eating them by now...)

Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what is right. To succeed, planning alone is insufficient. One must improvise as well. The easiest way to solve a problem is to deny it exists. The day you stop learning is the day you begin decaying.

It will be a UK bank account. I'm looking at payment gateways at the moment. Paypal is quite attractive in some way, less so than others, but also quite expensive. Not sure which way we'll go, but any of them will allow direct credit or debit card payments. We also haven't decided what will be the donation levels that bring membership - which won't be compulsory with a donation, I know some people wish just to donate without coming involved.

Isn't it easiest to work with a payment platform that accepts all kinds of payment methods, like Adyen: www.adyen.com/accept-payments No idea about the costs involved though.

Here in the Netherlands credit cards are used, but not by the majority of people. For me PayPal was a godsend to be able to buy internationally.

Some forums insert advertisements when the user is not a paying member. It motivates becoming a paying member :).

Giving people badges or gold stars would only magnify / create a hierarchy.
Yes, money talks, but in this instance it should remain silent.

You're right. It should have been and it should be. Time to file for a change of name.

Agreed. Silent facilities not enjoyed by the hoi polloi would be OK, I reckon.

Extraordinary achievement, and a testimony to all those involved of their love of photography and the need for a photographic community. I hope we all do our best to make this work, and judging by those that have already registered to use the site that is happening. I will be grateful for a continued opportunity to grow in this craft and connect with others.
