This is the weekly Collegial Show Your Photos Any Brand thread where we invite you to show your own pictures. It is collegial in that it is a pleasant and friendly place among photographers to share.

I will begin this thread each Monday (Pacific Standard Time) to give each of you all the chance to share your weekend photos with us, for those that follow a regular work week schedule and choose to do it that way. But the pictures can be taken at any time with any camera, including your cell phone. It's open to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. The images posted can be anything from casual snaps to extraordinary. I'll be sure to comment to each of your photos, if you choose to share. Replies from others are encouraged also.

The intent of this thread to mainly to just show photos in a relaxed way and to generate replies or comments about them. Generally I'm not planning to critique any image unless asked. But I or we may ask things about a photo that may develop into a discussion, always being friendly and helpful. It has been a request that I mention this and from what I've learned from past experience: Can you ask a member first if they would mind you editing their photos?

Remember it's all about the enjoyment of taking pictures regardless of what we have. We can learn from each. Please share any tips or techniques too. A narrative sometimes also helps. Thanks everyone for your participation.

Subject: Taking Pictures in the Rain with the Olympus E-500

Last Saturday afternoon I went to our local rose garden to take pictures with two Olympus E-500 cameras (and my Canon M-series cameras too). We had an unusual amount of rain for this time of year. But that's a perfect time to capture roses with raindrops.

Using the old 8 megapixel Olympus camera that was released nearly 20 years ago was challenging. It was something I started last week and wanted to continue with this. It reminded me the difficulty we had in those days of taking pictures with tough lighting conditions and at times rain. It also made me appreciate the advancements we have made over the years with digital camera technology.

At times the rain came down hard enough to interfere with the images a little. So take that into account for this old camera. Maybe I'll take some photos in better weather sometime later if you all are interested. I hope you all are taking some time to take photos also with an old camera. The shutter speeds were so low, that I really had to try harder to keep the camera steady. It's always important to do so, but with these darker conditions, it was especially important. Generally with the Olympus E-500, ISO500 is the highest I normally like to use. Higher than that, the photos can be quite grainy.

I just love all of that blue sky with the clouds. Lately, I've been taking pictures of sky and clouds too. I'm able to do that as a passenger in a car and I see all sorts of interesting things. 😀 Those are interesting dishes for the telescopes. Those cows look huge. I assume that they must be docile, but they would still "make me afraid". 😀

I'm glad you liked the rainy roses. I took lots of photos of these flowers with the Canon M50 Mark II cameras too. I knew that it was a little unusual to get summer rain at this rose garden, so I took extra amount of pictures.

Subject: Taking Pictures After the Rain with the Canon M50 Mark II

When the rain subsided a little, I started taking photos at the rose garden with the Canon M50 Mark II cameras. Part of the time I still was using an umbrella to keep the sprinkles off the gear. The photos are much better than the Olympus ones, primarily because there's about a 17 year gap in technology. Secondly, it was not raining near as much, so naturally everything became more clear that way.

Here are some pictures taken with my Minolta Dimage A1 shortly after I got it. I used this camera from 2004 to 2013. It has a 5MP, 2/3" (8.8 x 6.6 mm -- 3.6 crop factor) sensor and an f/2.8-3.5, 28-200mm (FF equiv) fixed zoom lens. It takes jpg, tiff and raw files, though I never used raw files from it before last week. Maximum file size is 2560 x 1920. The screen is tiny (36 x 27mm) with only 118,000 pixels. Likewise, the EVF is only 235,000 Px. I am not satisfied with these sizes today.

There are photos of the later A2 Minolta here, which looks almost identical. This was an 8MPx version, but I could not afford to upgrade at the time! As you can see from the photos, there are many more controls on the outside than usual today, which is nice, as you dont need to look at the menus very often. There is a review of it here.

I was playing around with f/11 last night.

The first picture, I was using a Daylight white balance setting of about 5200K white balance.

In the second picture, I dropped the white balance to the White Fluorescent setting of about 4000K.

Thanks for sharing with us your old pictures from the Minolta camera. I know what you mean about the LCD screen not having enough pixels. When I took pictures with the Olympus E-500 at the rose garden, the LCD screen was almost worthless. I could not tell if some of the images were a little soft due to camera shake or motion blur. The colors seemed washed out too. So I really was not able to chimp and effectively review the images. I almost wanted to delete every photo from what I saw in the LCD screen, but I patiently waited until I could see the images on the computer. I was relieved that the images seen later on the computer were much better than what I initially saw on the LCD screen.

But taking pictures with the old camera with limitations actually became fun. It was much harder than using the modern cameras, especially since it was dark and raining. Since I was carrying an umbrella it also made it difficult to change settings much. So often I just left the aperture at F8 or F9. But if I did not have the umbrella and it was not raining, I probably would have adjusted the settings more to reduce the ISO levels...or increase the shutter speeds.

I often will narrow the aperture to gain depth of field. I like playing around with the white balance too. I use AWB most of the time. But will change to cloudy white balance on cloudy days. Sometimes cloudy white balance works well late in the evening with long shadows or if I'm in a dark forest.

When I first started out, I was using AWB, but I don't know if it was the camera I had at the time, (a T6), or Canon's algorithm, but I thought my pictures were coming out looking washed out or over exposed or something. I switched over to Canon's Presets (Daylight or Cloudy, etc) and never looked back.
About 85% of the time now, I use a Kelvin temperature of 5300.

I did find one good use of the AWB, and that's when I am using a strong (like a 10 stop) ND filter. It offsets that really ugly green color cast that ND filters can sometimes cast. Even the Presets didn't help, but for some reason, the AWB does.

Here are some pictures taken with the Minolta Dimage A1 on Friday last. As you can tell, the weather was quite variable.

These two iron bars on the wall near the west door represented for several centuries the official standard lengths of the ell: the linen ell of 89.6 cm (35.3 in) and the drapery ell of 77.6 c (30.6 in) and have been here since before 1685. For some unknown reason, the ratio between the two ells is (root 3)/2!

One of the horse-drawn open carriages (fiacres) that take tourists on guided tours through the city.

Although limited by its largest filesize of only 2560 x 1920, I think this camera acquits itself well, even today.

Yes, I agree...that camera did very well. The images are sharp. Thanks for sharing with us photos from a camera from your past.

A footnote to my Minolta Camera: I used this extensively for taking photos in archives which were then used at home for my research into the conducting of Gustav Mahler. I had no problems with the camera while I was doing this and managed to collect about 30 CDs worth of images over two periods of two months in 2004/5. It was pretty robotic work once I had established the process and the EXIF data shows that I was able to get through a score of 220 pages and 326 images in 2:17 hours! The quality was not only good enough to study at home, but some of the images were reproduced in the published score.

This can be seen in the context of the publication here. Looking back on it, while I might be able to get better quality from the Canon R6, which I had 17 years later, the much lighter Minolta was much more suitable for long hours of work and the quality was quite adequate. Furthermore, manipulating the images in Photoshop often enabled me to see details, like erased markings, that were pretty illegible to the naked eye.

Subject: Two Small Birds and a Heron

Three days ago I walking in a park and I saw these two birds. I quickly snapped off a few photos. I waited around for them to return, but they did not. Then I heard the familiar sound of a "squawk" and looked and saw this heron. Small black birds were chasing and attacking it. It landed on the opposite side of the pond from where I was standing. I took again some quick photos. Usually once the heron lands there and is fishing for more food, you can take quite a few more photos of it. But since the birds were still attacking it, it flew off again. So I at least was happy that I got a few photos of it to share with you all. I liked the backgrounds that I got with the small birds and heron too.
