This is the weekly Collegial Show Your Photos Any Brand thread where we invite you to show your own pictures. It is collegial in that it is a pleasant and friendly place among photographers to share.

I will begin this thread each Monday (Pacific Standard Time) to give each of you all the chance to share your weekend photos with us, for those that follow a regular work week schedule and choose to do it that way. But the pictures can be taken at any time with any camera, including your cell phone. It's open to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. The images posted can be anything from casual snaps to extraordinary. I'll be sure to comment to each of your photos, if you choose to share. Replies from others are encouraged also.

The intent of this thread to mainly to just show photos in a relaxed way and to generate replies or comments about them. Generally I'm not planning to critique any image unless asked. But I or we may ask things about a photo that may develop into a discussion, always being friendly and helpful. It has been a request that I mention this and from what I've learned from past experience: Can you ask a member first if they would mind you editing their photos?

Remember it's all about the enjoyment of taking pictures regardless of what we have. We can learn from each. Please share any tips or techniques too. A narrative sometimes also helps. Thanks everyone for your participation.

    Subject: Angora Fire

I'm still sorting through the photos I took in October during our trip. Here's a few more. Just outside of South Lake Tahoe, California there was the Angora Fire in June of 2007 that destroyed 3000 acres (1214 hectares) of trees. Some homes in the area were also destroyed.

Photo No. 1 - Here we see the skeleton of those trees.

Between some rainy periods this weekend we decided to go for a walk close to home.
A few moments with some light drizzle but still a nice walk for some breath of fresh air

    Photobygms,

Thanks. I do also like the last two photos, so that's why I wanted to include it with my Angora Fire photos. Right after that fire occurred, sometime in 2007 or 2008 I was able to take pictures of the burned down cabins and a few vehicles. Not all the trees burned to the crown. I believe I took those with my Sony H2 camera, but I could not find them.

    Photobygms,

Ah, the weather looks like what we have in Oregon. It's perfect if it's not raining too hard, when using an umbrella. You sure were able to get close to that heron, so that you could capture it at 70mm focal length. Recently a heron got close enough to me too, so that I was able to catch it with 45mm FL. Well, I also got it with the Tamron 159-600mm lens too. I showed some of those on Dpreview. I was going to show them here sometime later.

I posted some more Christmas trees here. The experience of visiting the Weihnachtsmarkt to photograph the large tree in front of the Rathaus last Friday afternoon enabled me to meet this lady:

    L1001654_b.jpg

Chatting with her was actually the highlight of the afternoon for me. She sensed, of course, that my German accent was not Viennese, but thought I was German, rather than English -- quite an undeserved compliment in the circumstances. Her modern barrel organ -- a rare sight today -- was beautifully made: the pipes were excellently tuned and the figurines danced to the delightful music. She showed me how she changed the punched paper rolls (similar in concept to the punched cards we used to use to input computer data decades ago, when I was in college). You can see the rolls in her bag.

    L1001652_b.jpg

The lady was not totally sightless, but clearly it was a challenge for her to change the rolls, and she did so purely by feel. Although my eyesight is pretty good, I find it difficult seeing whether a shot is in focus through the eyepiece, and always have to check afterwards, so I can relate in a small way to her problems.

We should all be thankful that we have good sight and can enjoy this hobby of photography.

On my way to the market, I passed this behind the Rathaus:

    L1001639_b.jpg

    a close up:

    L1001639_c.jpg

    The explanation:

    L1001640_b.jpg

The poetry on the wall behind the statue reads:

Der Wehrmann Wiens gemahnt an die Zeit
Da unerschöpflich wie des Krieges Leid
Die Liebe war und die Barmherzigkeit

The soldier of Vienna reminds us of the time
    When love and mercy were
As inexhaustible as the suffering of war

One of the great things about photography is that you often have some interesting encounters with people. I am sure you both enjoyed talking about music.

    David,

You have some great subject matter there. Not only did I enjoy seeing the pictures, but I enjoyed reading about what you had to say about them. Excellent!

On Friday afternoon I saw this young man with an odd camera, equipped with flash. As I watched, he took a test shot of the church opposite and printed it out in similar manner to the paper attached to his box. I assumed that he was there to make and sell photos of tourists walking down the street; but he didnt approach anyone while I was there.

    Does anyone recognise the camera?

That's a hardy rose. I don't think we have any like that.

    David,

That's an interesting street photo. I don't recognize that type of camera at all. It's quite large..

    Subject: Lake Tahoe From Car

While on vacation last October, I got a number of nice photos while traveling in the car. I'm lucky I have a "chauffeur" that gives me the opportunity to take these kinds of pictures as a passenger. This is the Lake Tahoe area as seen from the southwest side of the lake. I wanted enough depth of field and adequate shutter speed. I was able to achieve that.
