That's a nice picture: nothing wrong with it at all. (By the way, I like your beach photos with the fog, or mist!)

One thing that I do quite often is to bring up the shadows, when "challenged" by the wide range of light intensities. This can be done easily with modern cameras -- without penalty.

I deliberately didnt do this with this photo because I wanted to ignore the tourists who were for me a distraction:

But, for what it's worth, here's what I might have done:

But I think the upper picture is more interesting.

You're right, Van Isle is a sort of heaven, we do miss it.
we stayed in Campbell River, Tofino, Ucluelet, and Victoria.
We did like the smaller places like Tofino more, But Victoria's chinatown was fun to see/visit
spotted a few bears at Stone Island near Tofino:

    David,

I like the first photo better too. Yes, there's a time when we want to deliberately do something to emphasize the subject matter.

Yes, they say that everything's bigger in Texas. 😉

    Photobygms,

Thanks for sharing your photos of Vancouver Island. I did not see any bears. That must have been exciting. I only saw one deer in a residential area and one owl in a tree. It brings back memories. I did not travel very far. I mostly stayed around Victoria, Thetis Lake Regional Park, Butchart Gardens, Sooke Potholes (where they mined gold), and made it as far west as French Beach.

The weather was pretty miserable today, so I decided to take the little Sony as it is even lighter than the Leica. I came across all these police cars in the centre of town.

    DSC01179_b.jpg

It turned out that all seven Austrian political parties were having their last rallies today and tomorrow at different places in the city -- kept apart by the police -- before the general election on Sunday. When I took the above photo it was around 2:45pm, the police were already in position, and the stage was set up for the band to perform at 4pm, followed by a speech by the FPÖ (Austrian Freedom Party) leader at 6pm. I was just passing through, and I wondered how the FPÖ had managed to bag the best spot in town; but polls have put them at 27% of the vote, with the VPÖ (Austrian People's Party), which forms the current government, on 25%. If these figures are indicative, a coalition between the two parties is likely, with Kikl as Chancellor. Given that the FPÖ are extreme right wing -- the UK newspapers have actually described them as Neo-Nazis -- feelings are high.

The other day, I saw a poster for the VPÖ. The white writing means "Strengthen the centre", but someone has inked it in black to make it read "Strengthen the rich", and I have to say that wearing what looks like a very expensive pair of ear-rings is perhaps asking for such comments...

I have no horse in this race. I just live here.

    David,

That's interesting. With politics, emotions can run high. I used to take pictures at political protests a long time ago, but sometimes they can be dangerous if someone doesn't want to have their pictures taken or for some other reason. At all of these protests that I attended, there were policemen to keep the peace. I remember the policemen patrolling the streets on bicycles and some were walking with the crowds of people.

    Subject: Wood Ducks Fighting

Today, I was able to take a few pictures of some wood ducks. Here they were seen fighting. But they seemed to be not hostile to each other either. They would chase each other and then get together again. I didn't know what to make of it.
