    The Weekly Landscape Thread

Welcome to the latest in a collection of new “weekly threads”, each focussing on a particular genre.
This new weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).
    6. Stay on topic

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking outdoors in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊
...looking forward to seeing your images

A sea of fog down below

Taken last weekend during a snow-shoe walk we made with some friends up to top of the Hochkeil mountain, in the Hochkönig region.
Below us, the sea of fog in the valley was cold and damp, but up here the sunshine and fresh air were great !

    Congrats Fireplace.
Your introduction nails what I enjoy about landscape photography.
Here's one from almost exactly the other side of the planet and it could hardly be more different.

Looks like magma but not molten anymore, have seen similar ground/soil whatever you want to name it in Iceland

When looking at the photos that @Fireplace33 posted I know I miss the Alps 😍

Great to see this thread - thanks for starting it. I'm going to look back in the archives.

Is this a landscape, lakescape or just random view? Finland, Mustio, December 2024.

It's all that. These are sedimentary rocks including layers of made up primarily of iron ore. They are extremely old and have been folded and refolded many times under great pressure creating, as Bryan says, metamorphic rock, Metamorphic means "changed" so it depends on what the original material is. My shot was taken in the Karajini national park in north western Australia. Its next door to the big iron mining areas. Pick up a hunk of this stuff and you'll be amazed at the weight. There's a lot of pure iron in it. To add to the color bands, you can come across blue asbestos layers as well.

Great idea for an ongoing weekly thread. I could stay in business for years with this one!

Thought I'd start with one of the most iconic North American landscapes, Moraine Lake just north of Banff. The Canadian Rockies are a landscape photographer's dream. You couldn't take a bad photo if you tried, with your eyes closed.

This is a fantastic shot. Like a slice cut deep into the earth with all those folded layers of "lava". The warm bright red colours are great, as you said, like the opposite of the cold blue in my Alpine shots.

A path on a hike with your dog ready to go on. Looks like a good place to explore.

I think there are many photos that fit into several different categories at the same time. This certainly fits into the Weekly Landscape Thread ;-)
The foreground trees provide framing and contrast

I think the term they use is "folding" - heat and pressure

You've captured a great view here. Speaks for the area and, of course, for the person behind the camera :-)
High contrast mountains with their reflection in a lake is a good start but adding in the boats with similar colours to the sunset colours on the peaks makes it sing.
