    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊
...looking forward to seeing your images

    Faistenauer Schafberg

Here are 2 landscapes from a summer hike, in Austria, that we made to the top of the Faistenauer Schafberg mountain. It is a fairly gentle 600m “climb/walk” up from the car park to the summit at 1559m above sea level. All the way, walking on paths and forest trails, in total about 7km long.

At one stage the fluffy clouds looked quite special, all lined up on a horizontal line. It was shot as a stitched panorama. The sun was breaking through here and there; lighting up some areas. That effect and the haze gives it a feeling of depth. Not everyone likes a border but I thought it fitted nicely for this shot

The second was taken 30 mins later, also from the top but looking in the opposite direction.
Showing normal life for a colourful thistle; high up and just enjoying its everyday view.

The first image is a stunner. It completely overshadows the second one (which is ok). The bottom of the clouds being nearly down to eye level gives a sense of immersion or of being up there. The multiple dark ranges and sun on the field and valley complete the other half of the picture. Envious scenery to have in your back yard - 7 k's to see it doesn't seem like much!
I don't mind the border. The shade of grey feels appropriate for the image. Maybe a touch wide. I would like the white inner border to be a touch wider to balance with the grey but that may be mimicking the white edge of card around the image so it is as it is.

    the calm before the storm

    IMG_20250228_111653.jpg

These two pictures were taken on my walk home from university. It was getting dark and a storm was rolling in. We get a lot of summer storms in Salzburg, though they rarely do more than make the humidity worse.
That time I kept getting distracted trying to capture the threatening, dreary atmosphere, as well as the lighting in the distance.

    IMG_20250228_112649.jpg

In this image I did actually manage to catch the lighting as it happened. I think it gives this fairly unremarkable driveway a bit of dissonance because the lighting is so off. Blindingly bright sky and a completely dark foreground.

And yes, I did overdo it and got completely soaked through when the storm finally hit.

They have quite an old fashioned feel to them. I like the second one best. The effect you described works well with the high contrast result.

I guess that the bark of these trees sort of peels a bit off a bit and looks like white paper?
Nice place for a walk, can't see any crocs in the water but you never know in Australia ;-)
The reflection is cool, making a good diagonal line in the image.

Nice leading diagonal and picture balance using the reflections. The water seems clear which makes the reflection strong. I guess that is so the crocs can better see you. A nice peaceful place - but I would not go swimming. 🤪

It was a nice day - and Norma's birthday. So we walked over the moors to a nice cafe. Of course, I took a camera ...

As we entered the woods, spring was in the air (and the ground)

I like thistles very much :) And this image is my favourite.
I would offer different crop, switcing focus from thistles to beautiful blueness. I'll attach this without preview (for now).
