    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊
...looking forward to seeing your images

    The Nock Mountains, Carinthia Austria

The central area of this region is a National park and a great hiking area with several reasonably gentle rounded mountains called “Nocks”.
There’s loads of paths to explore and the highest peaks are just under 2500m.
Here’s a view from along the route to the Oswalder Bock mountain hut.
The fence was an attempt to add in a bit of foreground interest and be part of a leading line, connecting up to the path and taking you back into the distant parts of the scene.
Shot with a new lens I was testing that day, the Viltrox 16mm /F1.8. I was quite happy with the lens on the Nikon Z7, It seemed to be nice and sharp 😊

Landscape images can be said to align with the horizon line. The photo is wider than it is tall, to capture the vastness and richness of a natural setting.

The photo shown is technically correct and is presented at a high enough resolution to give the feeling of immersion in the attractive natural landscape of the location, especially if viewed on a large screen with high resolution.

    Saguaro National Park -
We talked last week about the problems of overcrowded scenic areas, photo hot spots within parks, etc. Saguaro almost never has much traffic. I probably saw a dozen people the week I spent there, and most of them were at a wildlife sanctuary known for its flowers and the easily photographed desert animals recovering there.

A intersections of multiple leading lines gives this image depth and interest. The trail the slope coming down from the left the ridgeline in the distance and the fence line all lead the eye around this interesting area. Add to all of that - an interesting sky. Nicely done.

    The Deep Hole

The savannah wetland is a unique a common landscape in FL. Much of the time they are associated with "sinks." A good example is the Alauchua Sink - a large sink hole that connects the Floridan Aquifer to the surface near Gainesville, FL. Another such example known only as the deep hole, connects the Floridan Aquifer to the surface 130 feet above. Its location is on the lower lake of the Myakka River - Florida wild and scenic river in the state park preserve named after the river.

The best way to see the deep hole a 7 mile canoe trip down the Myakka which after about 3 turns into a wetland savannah teaming with wildlife. Some of the gators that had to be navigated around matched the length of my canoe and my canoe was a 17 foot Old Town. A unique place.

Image taken in December 1984 in dry season when the river was low but the Deep Hole kept the savannah wet. Camera Zone VI 4x5 view camera,

The sun's low down and covering everything with a warm glow. I like the way the big ears are catching that light. Some interesting looking prickly plants you captured there :-)

I like the way the light is picking out that group of tree trunks against the darker background and the way that they all reflect in the dark water.
One possible alternative edit could be to crop some off the right hand side to give a little bit more weight to that nice feature, compared to the brighter part on the right?

I had several shots. In reality I needed to be able to set up further left. The best shot would have been me setting up about 30 feet to the left in the lake and point back. I, however, was as far to the left as I wanted to go. I just got to Florida that summer and didn't like the idea of going wading with the gators. I hadn't met Clyde Butcher yet. Clyde shot the Everglades and Big Cypress by wading pulling a canoe with his camera equipment. He's still around. I don't know if I'm that brave. 😅
