This is a lovely photograph of a beautiful corner of Georgia, USA -- near Atlanta.

That said, I am worried by the high level of purple fringing at the top of the image, and wonder what caused it.

Given your obviously fantastic feeling for this technique, I was wondering, if you would perhaps have some ideas on the topic of getting a 'painterly look' (the original question was about an image which had a canvas-like background texture, but added in post) via double exposure?

David, do not let your heart be trubbled. 😀This called chromatic aberration and can be caused in this case by edges of dark objects against bright sky. Thanks for pointing this to me. I fixed it in my original.

Forests* and Fells

(*well, technically woods, but that didn't satisfy my alliterative mood)

The Lake District? Twice in as many weeks? It's almost like the old days, just with a fraction of the mileage and a measure of ascent that looks like a rounding error. Still, I made up for the lack of serious ascent by carrying a tripod and my not particularly light pair of GFX lenses (I don't really know why I want more of these things, it's not like I've got someone to carry a couple of them for me and they are heavy, yet I really do want a few more when my bank balance has recovered a bit).

In this instance I visited Elterwater in the English Lake District after recently seeing an image posted by Mark Littlejohn of a woodland scene with The Langdale Pikes visible through the trees. After a bit of scout around on the OS Maps 3D view, I came to the conclusion that the picture may have been taken in Low Wood, which sits just above the village of Elterwater, so I set out to see if I could find the spot.

At this task I failed completely and never found a view even remotely close to Mark's wonderful picture, but I had a really enjoyable walk and came away with some completely original views of my own instead.

All images were taken with the Fujifilm GFX100S and mostly the 35-70mm, although at least one 100-200mm image has crept into the mix. The woodland images were all taken on a tripod as were most of the landscapes (having carried the damn heavy thing through the woods all the way up a sodding hill I was definitely going to make sure I used it). I think all of the 35-70 images involved a CPL and they were all processed from single raw files in Capture One Pro 23.

1. We're All Rooting for You

Initially I followed the main path North through Low Wood, sticking close to the Western edge of the woods in the hope of finding the elusive view of The Pikes. This was a pretty fruitless search and eventually I got bored and decided to head off piste into the depths of the woods. I scrambled up what appeared to be a long abandoned trail towards an interesting cluster of trees at the top of the slope. This turned out to be something that didn't work, so I continued to wander around this higher section until I came across an area of seemingly forgotten walls and workings. One of the things that caught my eye was the exposed roots on this tree and the way the light was catching them. Sometimes I just think trees like to make like difficult for themselves when they decide to plant their roots, either that or they just like a challenge.

2. The Cool Kids

Okay, I may be pushing this anthropomorphic tree thing a bit here, but this scene makes me think of a bunch of cool kids pointing at and mocking our hero tree on the left for its bold choices when it decided to put down roots.

3. From Order To Chaos

This dry stone wall appears to have failed in spectacular fashion and is gradually returning to nature over the years.

4. Lost Way

While exploring this seemingly unfrequented part of the woods I came along this track running through the area that looks like it hasn't been used in years, yet remains in rather good condition.

5. A Ray of Light

At this point in the afternoon / early evening, the sun was still high enough to be putting out decent crepuscular rays picking out details on the land below. Unfortunately, I wasn't really in the best of locations to make the most of this, having just exited the upper reaches of the woods, so this is the only one I caught. Ideally I'd have liked to have been further down the fellside with a better view of The Pikes, but it is what it is.

6. Misty Mountains

This was taken a little further down the fellside. I quite liked the way the volume of air between Bowfell in the distance and Lingmoor Fell in the middle distance on the left was being side lit by the sun off to the left.

7. Proper Pikes

Having walked most of the way back down to Walthwaite Bottom, I got a much better view of The Pikes, well, two of them at least (Loft Crag and Harrison Stickle). There's actually some really nice clouds cropped off the top of this picture, but unfortunately they're accompanied by a less attractive splodge of blue sky in the top right, so I felt it worked much better cropped to 16:9 like this.

8. Stormier Skies

This was taken about ten minutes after the previous image and that blue blob has been replaced with the good old fashioned heavy clouds The Lake District is famous for (well, that and some lakes apparently, but who's interested in them?) It's actually a completely different setup to the previous shot having scouted extensively about the crag I was stood on, trying different locations, views and compositions, before ending up back in more or less the original spot I'd started off at. That tree line leading off to the right hides a road. The next shot was taken from a spot I discovered by following that road.

9. Sort of A Sunset

Having wandered along the tree lined road, I spotted this rather nice tree sat up on the fellside. After a treacherous scramble up to it, followed by quite a bit of back and forth amongst the browning ferns I arrived at this composition. The main elements I was trying to arrange here are the tree as the main anchor, with The Pikes and the distant cluster of farmhouses framed by the other group of trees on the left. It was a bit tricky as just a few feet of movement would make the farmhouses disappear below the ferns due to the undulating ground around me. Ideally I could have done with a stepladder, but my hands were already full carrying the tripod. Ansel Adams had it easy with assistants to lug all of this stuff around for him.

The sky was a bit troublesome on this and the previous shot. I've exposed for the highlights and it's not blown at all, but balancing it against the foreground without it ending up looking stuck on or just plain weird was a real challenge. Ideally I'd like to pull a bit more detail and colour out of it, but it seems like a reasonable compromise as it stands. The image has nine layers on it, with three of them dedicated to balancing out the sky.

This was pretty much the last few minutes of interesting sky before the sun dipped below the mountains off to the left, completely killing any detail and colour that had remained up until this point.

Double exposures work for me but my pick is the first one, I know it is insignificant but the bird makes it work for me the best.

About the Shipping Forecast, when I heard it first time I must say I was a bit surprised but I kinda like to listen it.

The first shot is actually focus stacked, and fortunately the bird held its head in just the right position for just long enough!

Many people listen to the shipping forecast like poetry, even if they've never been to sea. The late night broadcast is especially soothing I believe - I'm usually fast asleep by then 😉

The first is my pick of the forest shots - the moss seems to glow in the dim light. And who doesn't love a crepuscular ray? 😁

I can understand fishing as measure to spend quality time, but doubt that fish in such water is tasting any good.. :P

Nice play with double exposure, I like the results.

Popping colours work well here. But I'd loved to have it framed bit left (or wider), now I'm intrigued what is written on white placard.

This was light show over weekend in 3 different places to celebrate end of long days and start of long nights, I visited one in old town. This queue is from people going upper part of old town where in Danish King's Garden light show was presented. However, it was filled with people already when I arrived, so I took some pictures of crowd and decided to go lower part of old town in hope that there is less people and this shot was made when I was stopped in my attempt by such crowd. This is Short Leg street, connecting lower and upper part, it's quite steep and narrow street with stairs and if there are people not able to climb stairs fast then such queues appear, especially if there is constant stream of people.
Below are some shots I made in lower part of old town, Danish King's Garden was too dark to get any good shots.

Light dance, also crowded and I did't want to squeeze any closer with my camera, instead I stood on old wall bit back to get better view.

These are very nice, all featuring a really appealing palette. I'm a bit indifferent to multiple exposures, but these work well with both exposures complementing each other. Presumably they were made in camera?

A great set, although the following would be my picks...

Nice composition with good timing to catch the bird. It's even looking into the frame, which seems very cooperative, they usually fly away for me just as I'm about to take the shot.

I like the way the rotting hull acts like a frame around the large ship in this one.

This has an enjoyable surreal quality to it.

This almost looks like the rig has been painted onto the rotting grey boards.

These days, I always dose up with a heady cocktail of beta blockers, blood pressure tablets, aspirin and prostate meds, not to mention I carry an NTG spray for angina attacks in my pocket, just in case. Anyone stealing my stash is in for a crushingly disappointing trip.

On the plus side, I do have a vivid imagination.
