Very nice processing, the only takes catches my eye it the RHS building's edge, this is probably strong sunlight. I like the way you created a foreground from the concrete wall. A top job, really liked it.

I liked the 3rd one most and it is very nice abstraction for the second.

    In scenes like this one,...

... for me the reflections become the subject and the other objects are reduced to almost silhouettes with just a few defining details, and yet they give the image structure and interest.
Hope it works for others like that too

I like this silhouette boat and man shot. Being a farmer is a tough job :) Imagine how to look after all these cattle in the middle of a delta.

Lovely scenery. Well captured. It was a long long time ago that I was on Mull.
A Scotland holiday would be good again

    Sunset at Brinscall Woods

Earlier in the week I took an evening walk into the nearby woods in Brinscall. My intention was to have a wander around some of the old farm ruins that may be found there, then head up to a specific spot overlooking Heapey Moor for sunset if conditions were looking good, but first, I foolishly decided to have a quick look around Hatch Brook to see if there were any interesting tree studies to be found.

These are all taken with the GFX100S and 35-70, mounted on a tripod and rocking a CPL to reduce glare on the foliage (the sunset shots were taken without the CPL). All processed from single raw files in Capture One Pro 23.

    1. Hey There

I do like groupings of trees and they way they often seem to be gesturing to one another. Their conversations would likely take decades, given the scale of tree lifetimes, so it's hard to guess what they might be saying. In this case it looks like the tree at the back is offering a friendly wave to a friend, but it could just as easily be saying "get off my lawn". More likely they're completely oblivious of one another, but it would be nice to think there's more going on in these scenarios.

    2. Mossy Monster

I was drawn to the straggly moss hanging off these fallen branches.

    3. A Distinctive Character

While this tree stood out from its surroundings, it was difficult to find a composition that did it justice. This was the best I could come up with at the time.

    DSCF3323.jpg

    4. Precarious Position

This spiky little character hangs precariously above Hatch Brook and seems to be reaching for the viewer. I'd love to have just a little bit of mist here to separate it from the background.

    DSCF3329.jpg

Several hours later, I noticed yellow light streaming in from the edge of the woods at a sharp angle, indicating sunset was fast approaching and I still hadn't moved from my initial location by the brook.

This gave me 30 minutes to reach my planned sunset location, which was roughly a mile away and much higher up on the other side of the woods. This wouldn't have been a problem three years ago when I was still bobbing up and down mountains, but as I now have a heart condition, it proved to be a bit more challenging.

    5. Exit Through The Gift Shop

The gift in this case being those tree roots on the far side of the brook.

    6. The Impenetrable Barrier

As I was briskly making my way along The Goit (a freshwater canal that runs along the bottom edge of the woods) I saw lots of interesting potential images due to the strong side light cutting in from the slowly sinking sun. As I was rushing to reach my planned location, I ignored most of them, but had to stop and quickly snap a few such as this robust looking fence. Nothing is getting through that.

    7. The Goit's Tree Lined Path

The path that runs alongside The Goit is a plesant tree lined affair, popular with dog walkers and cyclists and on this evening it looked particularly pleasant (bloody midges aside). It was much less pleasant last night, as I walked back to Brinscall much later after sunset in the pitch dark, with just a head torch to light my way, yeah, that was borderline creepy. But that's another story for another set of images.

As I clicked the shutter and the 2 second timer did its countdown, a dog appeared on the path and started running towards me, criss crossing between the trees. I quietly cursed to myself about this, but as it's a 9 second exposure and the dog never stopped in one place during that time you wouldn't know it was there, even I can't see where it was and I know where to look!

    DSCF3335.jpg

After a brisk yomp up the path that runs along the edge of the woods and up the steep hillside I reached my intended spot with 10 minutes to spare and quickly set up, before pausing to take in the scene and allow my racing heart to calm down.

    8. Sunset Over Heapey Moor

I took a number of shots at this spot, mostly with a featureless sky. So I was quite lucky for the single large cloud to drift into the shot as it did. This is a single shot taken at base ISO from a 3 shot exposure bracket and is exposed to retain the highlights on the right with a little extra space on the histogram to ensure they weren't clipped and so the bulk of this image has been recovered from some inky black shadows, it's remarkably noise free all things considered. What's less impressive is the sharpness. I have a similar shot taken from the same spot last year on the Z7 that shows way more detail when you zoom into it, despite having half the number of pixels to play with. This may be due to limitations in the 35-70 lens used here compared to the 24-70 f/2.8S used in the Nikon shot which is an exceptional lens, differences in atmospheric conditions or even shutter shock on the tripod (I shoot the Nikon using ES, but have been using EFCS on the Fuji). Further comparison is needed, but that niggle aside I'm very happy with this image, it's still full of detail, just not as sharp as I'd expected.

    9. A Closer Look

Here I've switched up to the 100-200 (80-160 equiv) to get a closer look at the scene, particularly showing more detail around Chorley and the distant Harrock Hill.

    DSCF3376 1.jpg

    10. Afterglow

Roughly the same scene as #8, but taken 15 minutes later and five minutes after the sun had actually set. Personally I prefer the other shot and its sense of tranquility, but think this has its own particular charm.
