Good morning to everyone wherever you are in the world... It's been a bit of a testing time for me. About 10 days ago I had a detached retina and an immediate emergency operation. It'll be a month before I know if it's successful. And even then, a long time before my full vision is resumed. It may be that I'll have to start the thread and offer a photo from before the op, but won't be able to contribute as much as reading from a screen is tiring.

I am really sorry to hear your eye problem, I hope the operation was successful and that your vision will be restored.

Yesterday I read an article about elephants in Thailand. I like the way you cropped it with the animal's direct gaze.

    Summer of '68

I confess, I did not take these pictures, but I have been processing them this week.
Back in 1968, my husband travelled with his parents in a Fiat car through Europe, USSR to Iran, and back through Turkey. Recently our daughter suggested he should write up the story of his travels, so he looked out some old transparencies and had a few digitised (a free sample initially). I managed to track down the exact spot where two of these were taken 57 years ago on Google Streetview. There have been a few changes, not least the transformation from Soviet republics into fully fledged countries of Georgia and Armenia.

    Kuybyshev

The village is now known as Haghartsin, Armenia

The building (village school) seems to be little changed.

    Yerevan

On our visit to Yerevan 5 years ago, I recall entering the city over this bridge, but sadly I don't have my own "after" image, so Streetview will have to suffice. The church of St Sarkis has apparently grown taller in the intervening years, and has been surrounded by tower blocks.

I hope this turns out well for you. A close friend had a similar experience a couple of years ago and is now fine, so fingers crossed.

A tourist woman and her daughter walk under the centuries old outer defensive walls of Constantinople. This door faces east. The coastline on the opposite side is in Asia. It was very windy and rainy.

    The Long Wait

First of all, I hope everything goes well for you, and that you get your sight back to normal. Keep us informed, and let one of know if you need one us to kick off the thread on Saturday.

The "Chiesa di San Domenico" has been closed since 2012 due to the Modena earthquake. It reopened in January, and it is now possible to see the terracotta sculptural group by Antonio Begarelli depicting "Jesus in the house of Martha, Magdalene with the Apostles Peter and Paul and other women" (XVI century). This is another entry for a project I have resumed, concerning Emilian Renaissance terracotta sculptural groups. The detail and expressivity in these sculptures is amazing. It is interesting to move around and see these sculptures from different angles.

I photographed these hand held, as the light was OK, and the freedom of movement helps with the composition. The 28-400 was used for all these. The "slowness" of the lens is no problem as I did not want shallow DoF.

A nice quiet part of town if I remember. Rainy weather has its positives - nice shiny pavements and light reflections.

This must have been a very interesting journey. At the height of the Cold War, traveling to the USSR by car was an adventure. I guess they passed through the Sarp border crossing into Georgia, then later into Armenia and Iran. I really wish I had been able to see Iran before the revolution. I lived in Van, Turkey, which is a border city to Iran. Travel was so easy by coach. I intended to go there, but I never did.

Like the way the tight crop emphasises the patterns on the trunk. And of course the eyes.

    Again, good luck.

At least you have got lots of snow. Yes, those two tiny patches of colour draw the eye instantly to the skier.

Sorry to hear that, get well!

I'm not home so some photos from my phone, made walk on northern coast where wild forest grows between sea and 30 meter high cliffs. On summer it's much more spectacular, almost like in tropic. In winter it's just trunks and branches..

This has to be seen big. The composition drags you through the arch.
