    Good Weaverville video, though.

I agree completely with the well-stated appreciation for these two timeless images.
The ensuing conversation about where and when was pretty interesting too.
On the choice between the wider image or the closer crop, there is something to be said for both.
The wider crop contains details that are very interesting at setting the scene and completing mood, like the difference in the cars that sadly get cropped away in the closer crop.
But on a monitor, the closer crop has the merit of concentrating on the human interaction and making it even more timeless (and placeless). That can be a benefit too.
The final thought is, of course, that we need both.
How to have a cake and eat it too.
Simple: print very large, display on a wall and let the audience soak up the whole scene from a distance before moving closer for the details.

My fascination with silhouettes, telephone poles, wires and cables makes this photo one of my favorites! I particularly like how everything is crowded into the frame as I might have wondered if more space at the top would be needed, if I were shooting it. The featureless black in much of the image, with a sun just above the horizon, are other aspects that appeal to me very much.

Regarding multiple copies of same photo on a page, I've noticed there are quite a few times when people could edit out the photo in their replies - same with the multiple quotes in a single reply and the occasional oops when someone replies inside someone else's quote and you can't tell who said what. There are ways to streamline the thread, but I hope you all get the format you prefer 'cause I don't want this marvelous group to disband!

Oh yes! Brilliant capture. Love those endless ropes, cables, masts, flags etc. And all against this fab background. TOP prize this week (imho).

Superb example of a case in point. One does not have to travel far to capture amazing shot. Excellent. You have endless shadows, colours, shapes etc at your disposal and all you have to do is observe and capture. Brilliant!!!

It's this simplicity which captured my eye. Excellent capture of shadows and angles. Now, would I crop the bottom part to accentuate the purity of the lines? - yes.
    But, it's personal. Amazing shot!

Great counterbalance case. Well spotted and captured. You can write countless stories about this. Amazing.

If it was not for the "modern" guy in a blue shirt on the left this would pass as a painting from impressionism period. Well done!

    GMTA.

On a side note, the people in these images are about 60 years old now.

Wow! Good sleuthing. if you turn the camera 90 degrees to the right, you should be able to see where the grocery story and Union 76 station was.

Thanks very much! It's really cool to hear the different ideas for this sliver of what was the original image (which I no longer have, even though the pic is only a couple of years old).

I love that you found the exact place! Made me think about the opportunities for an interesting thread here, where people post some shots from the past and others (who know the spot, live near it or get to travel by on some trip they're making) try to go out and create a modern day version or some variation. Could be interesting...

For whatever reason (I often don't know myself) I'm also fascinated by the google arrows and the interesting implications... so I thought I'd try to incorporate them into the original version:

It would even be possible to add some other item replacing the gas pump... like a bitcoin machine or something else, representing different eras.
