TODAY we mark the 100th EDITION of this thread on DPRevived.

If you feel an urge to celebrate or boogie-woogie through the aisles, feel free to do so!

Welcome to the Wednesday Comments and Critique (No Theme & No Brand) thread!

We are dedicated to continuing the great tradition of this C&C thread because we are convinced that looking at, and talking about images is vital for better photography.

Our tried and tested concept (15 years and running!) is a weekly "peer-to-peer" photo comments & critique encounter, in which you GIVE and RECEIVE.

The idea is simple: you post a photo or photo-based image that you have made and get critique on it. And in return you give other people your honest but constructive opinion of their images.

Any Theme, Any Camera, Any Style, Any Subject.

We are still figuring out how to create the convenience of threaded view on this new forum.
For now, let us agree that you post an image or essay with a title and short explanation, and that all comments include the image as a quote.
Replies to comments may or may not include quotes.

THREAD GUIDELINES – THE SHORT & SWEET VERSION
    • This thread does not care about brands. It’s not about the tool, but the image.
    • Post one image or essay that you have made and would like to get comments on.
An entry can either be a single image or a short essay. With an essay we mean not a collection of random images without any connection, seeking C&C on more than one of them. We mean instead a limited number (3 to 10) of connected images that together try to tell a story, create a fuller picture of a situation, event or location, etc.
    • Add a clear title to your post to distinguish your entry.
    • Look at the other images/essays and give your comments on at least one of those.
    • For comments, try to go beyond a simple pat on the back or a short dismissal.
    • Do you like an image (or essay) ? Try to explain WHY it appeals to you.
    • Negative feedback is OK (we all want to learn), but be polite and constructive. Try to explain why the image (or essay) does not appeal to you and how it might be improved.
    • Please stay on topic, i.e. concentrate on the image and the photographic comments, without getting into politics or other distractions. No non-photographic arguments.

The critique you give is vital.
What was your first impression? What catches your eye about an image? Why?
What do you like, and what distracts you? What would you change?

Fiddle with the image in your head - composition, perspective, color balance, exposure.

    PLEASE NOTE CLEARLY:
Unless the original poster specifically states (for every individual posting offered for C&C) that they do not want their image(s) to be downloaded, altered or reposted, it is understood that within the context of this thread, other participants are free to download and alter the posted image and repost it in a reply for C&C purposes. That reposted image may remain permanently within the week's thread, or you may remove it after a short period of time if you prefer. The downloaded and altered images are not to be used for any other purposes nor uploaded anywhere else than within the context of the C&C in this thread. No copyright disputes here!

Encourage - it is a scary business putting your work up for other people to judge!

More general feedback is also welcome.
Do you know something about taking the same sort of image that would make matters easier - share your own as an example in your reply.

Have fun, be respectful and let’s stick together!

    TAJ MAHAL

In December 2016 and January 2017 we spent a few weeks in India, visiting a number of cities and sites in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
New Year's Eve was spent rather sadly in the bubble of the ballroom of our hotel, where we were mostly among other tourists, eating from a buffet, watching "traditional dances" and listening to a hysterical DJ's countdown. We drank a glass at midnight, toasted to new adventures in the coming year and called it a day.

I was up early on January 1 and went for a stroll through the sleeping city.
On this early morning walk I came to a place that looked like fun: a fairground and carnival.
Inactive at that hour, I saw that it was filled with the kind of mechanical rides and ferris wheels that have been banned in our western countries for decades, because of safety hazards. A smell of Indian food and sweets being prepared for the day invited me in and I talked to some of the carnival people.

Then I went back to the hotel and told Els that we would go for the planned cultural visits before noon and that we then would take a nap, but that I would take her to a surprise in late afternoon and evening. And so we did.
I guided her back to that fairground and we spent a few hours and had a ridiculous amount of fun at that carnival on that first of January. We were the only non-Indians there, so we quickly became an additional attraction, with lots of people wanting to get a selfie with us. We ate and drank and chatted and rode the rides. For sure one of the best nights of our whole trip and so much better than the sterile night before.

One of the attractions was a quite large replica of the Taj Mahal, made of cardboard and styrofoam, intended as a backdrop for photography.
There was a queue of couples and families lining up on the fake grass to get their photo taken by an "official photographer" in front of that Taj Mahal, famed landmark of their own country but so far north that many of them would never get to visit it in reality.

I looked for another angle and found this (Taj Mahal viewed from the side or the back, I don't recall exactly):

There's this amazing spiral viewing tower on top of the Grünberg in Austria. Even viewing it from the side, you get a glimpse of the breathtaking view onto Traunstein and Traunsee, that you'd be able to fully see from up top.

    Beach anyone?

Great White Frozen North has been bombarded by lots of snow recently, up to half a meter (20 inches) and freezing temperatures (-20C or -4F). The view of the beach is a relief, however we have to wait few more weeks for the arrival of Spring...

Back in 2007, We went on holiday to Hong Kong. I took loads of pictures in the days when I knew nothing. One of the days we went into China (via the underground railway) and walked along the beach. Memory fades, so I am not sure what I took - but it looks nice. 😁

Light at the End of the Road

Congratulations everone on making this such a good thread over the past 100 editions, and hopefully it will be at least as good in the coming hundreds.

My photo has nothing to do with this event, I am afraid, and is actually a side-product of a Street photography trip to Frankfurt in February.

    Two puzzling lines

About 12 years ago I took this photo on a great beach in Estonia. Taken with a Sigma 17-50 lens on a Nikon D7100 and corrected afterwards for lens distortion during the processing.
I was happy with the result but then noticed something that was somehow confusing for me at the time.
Now it's completely clear and obvious, of course :-)
I wonder if anyone else could be puzzled about why the shadow line, from the rock and sun, and the bright line on the water from the same sun had somewhat different angles in the picture ?

I take more pictures of my grandsons than anything else, even more than of the dam birds. Most are for their fun or for keepsakes, but every once in a while I get a photo I like for more than sentimental reasons, and this was one. Most soccer shots have a plethora of unattractive parents and referees, vehicles, bags and water jugs, portable toilets and tents. On rare occasions they play on a field at the edge of a complex that has real trees alongside! This was one of those times. Soccer also has some occasional moments that look choreographed. Grandson approved (the one in red in the middle).

    Garage Workshop

I walked over to my friend Steve's place the other day. Steve is that guy that almost every neighborhood used to have. Not so much anymore. When one's lawnmower won't start, Steve's the guy to get it going. Need a broken window pane fixed in your back door? Steve.

Steve's shop is Terrible and Wonderfull all at once.

It was late afternoon and the setting sun was blasting almost directly into his open garage door. The scene hit me like a fist! It was every garage workshop I had ever seen as a kid and adult.

A chaos of equipment, workbench, metal vises, wood vises, drill press. Nothing ever gets thrown away. There's a barbell set down there in the shadows somewhere.

Smells of oil and dust and gasoline. Cans of everything. Three-in-One oil, WD-40, Paint thinner, shellac. There's gotta be an old washing machine motor back there somewhere, rescued from the rusted out frame when his wife got a new one. Cuz, he might build something with that, someday.

The old, beat-up workbench has about one-half square foot of area to work on, if that. Screw drivers, wrenches, rusty tool boxes everywhere.

    Sigh, wish I were Steve.

Yeah, C'mon . . . the dance instructor or Cheer captain was standing just outside the image. They practiced this for hours. Carefully choreographed to upbeat music!

It takes a lot of shots! Photogs for Life and National Geo used to do it all the time. The image that got printed in the weekly magazine was the distilled effort of all the hundreds of images that were failures and frankly, boring pics of athletes in one kind of uniform or another.

But when the moment happens . . . Wow!

    Nice work.

I love visual canyons like this. Full of mystery and optical perspective.

I would have cropped a little and straightened some verticals.

    Good stuff!
