I've now completed the latest round of updates. Is this all an improvement?

What about the web site which will be the landing page for new members? www.the-photo.org/

Feedback would be good. [But, we are not going back to the old site]

    cheers

    Alan

I do not see forum rules anywhere unless I am missing something.

I'll sort that out later today. Thanks.

What is the easiest way to get to the Threads page from the-photo.org?

And the link on the-photo.org for the "Collegial Show" threads still links/refers to the dev site 😜

Hate to say it but I question the utility of the 'Misplaced Items' category and the workload it places on Admin.

I am unfamiliar with Misago but, on a Read-only page e.g. Image Discussions, I would prefer the 'Start Thread' button either to not show or to be grayed out (inactive) rather than having to jump through the hoops described here.

Problem mostly arises in general threads list, when someone hits "Start thread" button, but forgets to select appropriate forum - then this post is posted on first writable forum. Currently first writable forum is "Misplaced posts".

Do you want to say that when you click "Start thread" in eg "Image discussions" then default forum is also "Misplaced posts", not first sub-category under "Image discussions"?

Thanks for the quick response, Arvo.

In that case, it seems to be more complicated ... "but forgets to select appropriate forum - then this post is posted on first writable forum."

I would now say that the button should be inactive if the User has not yet selected an appropriate forum but I doubt that that is possible in Misago and not easy in HTML either.

Another way is clicking on the button brings up a dialog list of writable forums available in the Read-only category.

I take it that by "forum" we mean sub-category?

    Ted,

We are not changing the Misago code at this stage. When we get the latest version, I will ask Martin if he can fix the issue. It's been there since we started 2 years ago and it's not a big deal.

    Fixed

    Yes

    Hi Alan.
I think simplifying is usually positive... but isn't eliminating (or hiding) the different photographic themes (landscape, urban, macro, architecture...) perhaps going too far? It's certainly not common in photography forums...

It was discussed a LOT before we decided what to do. And we felt that having managed entries (like the weekly landscape etc.) was a unique and better way to get feedback and focus.

We have no issues in adding new subjects (such as macro or urban etc.) but we need people to look after it. Any volunteers?

Actually this is valid concern - we should not forget about "solo image posters" and about finding images by genre.

As long as we have no tags (tags would solve such kind of problems easily), I would propose next solution (doable within current forum structure and not contradicting with general idea - promoting weekly discussions). Would that work or not, I don't know.

We (Alan) could create hidden genres categories under Showcase your Photos, this way you can select appropriate category (like Street) while posting, posted thread will have genre label (like Showcase | Street) and its contents could be found by clicking that Street label or by navigating using Forums menu.

    ¡Hola!
I think it's a good option that could work: it allows for maintaining a simple structure, but also makes it easier to group (and search) the images thematically...

No, what we are doing isn't common but we think it works better in promoting engagement. The managed threads is our answer. Landscape is already included. These avoid the old genres issue of having ancient posts that don't get responses. Managed threads ensure that posts get responses. Our old site was full of ancient posts and unresponded to posts. It looked bad to new arrivals.
There is still the opportunity for anyone to post on anything they wish. We also have a couple of new "shepherded" broad categories coming up that should pick up plenty of hits. Street is on the way to becoming a "shepherded" weekly thread.

I just discovered that Street already is a hidden category (not under showcase, but weeklies?) and you are posting in there :)
Anyway there can be more genres in future, also their locations are not yet fixed - any suggestions are always welcome!
