I know nothing of how Misago code works, so you could well be correct in saying that it demands this structure and titling, but logical?

To me, something called the-photo.org is by definition and common consent the homepage of a website.

I shall say no more. 😀

I was also asking myself the same questions

How does a newcomer get to the-photo.org page if everything happens on dprevived.com?
    It's a really strange concept 🥸

  • March 17, 2025, 5:13 p.m.

He/she may be directed to the the-photo.org by other means (linked from other forums/blogs for example). Read Mike's explanations.

In some future (when domains are sorted out) it would be possible have pages like forum.the-photo.org and [www.]the-photo.org, this way there would be less confusion.

Sorry, I can’t find anything and have been screwing things up regularly. Not a fan so far.

  • March 17, 2025, 6:15 p.m.

You on mobile or on desktop?
For desktop most logical place (at least for me) is to start from Threads list - most weekly threads and many others are visible there, just click and you are done.
For mobile I can't say, what is the best way to navigate - have never used.

  • March 17, 2025, 6:33 p.m.

Let me see if I can clarify things:

We have the-photo.org. This points you to the web site. So, David, when you say:

you are correct. And that is what it is. I also own the-forum.website which at the moment goes to a development version. But that may change.

We also have dprevived.com. This is our forum. I'm looking out for another URL for it - something like the-photo-forum.org. But we are getting close to another forum name which isn't ours, so I am still looking.

On the forum, there's a link at the top which takes you to the web site. On the web site, there's a link at the top that (guess what!) takes you to the forum.

How much simpler do you guys want this?

The old page was just perfect.
I have no idea why you have decided to mess with it.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it

    Greg,

There were a lot of forums with no activity and they were detracting from what we are trying to do here.

Nothing is fixed and if you (or anyone) see anything you think should be there - and are willing to manage it to get it going - then we will add it in.

    You go here:

    go here.jpg

At which point newcomers will think click on the bolded "The Photo Forum" but ... nooo ..., it does something else.

I challenge any newcomer to realize that the plain text 'Web Site' at right and totally overwhelmed by the bold blue 'Choose Style' is where they should click.

Ted, this is not the point.

There is some idea floating that non-technical users are afraid of just forum and they initially will be directed to the-photo, where they can read ideas behind the project, information about becoming a member and so on. Then they can click to forum link(s) and already have some idea, what to expect and how to register and so on.

People, already knowing [our] forums do not need to visit the-photo at all.

Maybe the treads label can be renamed Latest or latest threads, to make it clearer.

    @AlanSh

I am not aware of the individual traffic figures for each forum/subforum, as you are.

I do remember that there was a lot of agonising (and much appreciated) hard work to get to the final layout, and the USP of that page is that many 50+ forums are instant on the eye with a quick scan of the page.

Having said that, I nearly always click on the Threads heading after accessing the forum.
At the end of the day, Alan, I will trust your decision on what is best for the forum and its future.

When I type 'dprevived dot com' ** into the FireFox address bar, I am taken to the forum page, not 'the-photo'

** Yes, I know that that is not the address of the "main page" now but it used to be and there are many, many live links left over that imply that it is THE address, not 'the-photo dot org'.

I predict that if clicking 'dprevived dot com' does not bring up 'the-phot' instantly by re-directing, membership and posters per day will not increase as much as is hoped.

  • March 17, 2025, 10:54 p.m.

It has NEVER taken you to the web site. Sorry Ted, but that just isn't true.

Right now there may not be that much of interest to us old members, other than maybe the photos. BUT: the web page adds real estate that we can also use in the future for information that COULD be of interest to old or new members. Think of the landing page at DPR. There's a lot of content and links on that page that may be of interest to ongoing members. We can all work together to figure out what all we want to be available and how to frame or link it there.

Thank you, Alan, for the clarification re: 'the web site'.

I thought that that 'dprevived.com' was the post-partum web site and that 'the-photo' was a later addition. Pardon my confusion as to their history.

I still cant figure out what the orange dot on the favicon signifies. Is it a dog biscuit? 😀

I cant visualise the landing page of dpr, because as long as I can remember I have always kept a forum page open in my browsers and I have navigated from that. (I am not a member there any more: I just lurk.) Similarly here, I keep a thread page open and navigate to the rest via the “threads” page. I only turn my computer off when it is misbehaving, and the iPad is always on.

Understood. It is what most of us who have been around this place for sometime do.
Now try to put aside your prior knowledge. Imagine someone has recommended The Photo to you and given you dprevived.com/ to have a look at. Try understanding it. How long do you think you would spend on the page before you go to to your previous photo site of choice? It is generally felt that a page where someone arrives for the first time has no more than two clicks to convince them this is a place they want to come to again.
dprevived.com/ isn't easy to grasp at first meeting but it is far easy to decipher for a newcomer than the previous dprevived.com/ The main purpose of the new dprevived.com/ is to give a structure that enables www.the-photo.org/ to work.

I suggesy dprevived.com/ is considerably easier for a newcomer to grasp than the previous Forum Index page. Even so, dprevived.com/ isn't designed for new arrivals. www.the-photo.org/ is what new arrivals will see first. If you have a look at it, it explains what we are about and gives direct links to easily understood things that might engage a newcomer.

For those who have never seen it, this is DPReview home page. www.dpreview.com/ - note all the ads - it would put me off if I was new.

You can get rid of the ads with browser extensions and then it looks like this:
