Yes, I agree. Plenty of better fish to fry first than Threaded View. I was just saying that's how I skip past side discussions I don't particularly wish to continue with. That, with the idea of letting them go wherever they wind up going.
Indeed! My experience here is proof to me that it pays to keep an open mind... because while I would have been for keeping off-topic discussion really limited before, I feel like I have seen a number of examples here, where it was really fun and productive. If it takes over the majority of the thread it originated in and hinders the conversation, the possibility of taking part of it out as a new topic is a nice one to have, but usually off-topic things settle down after a while anyway.
It is very clear to me Gear Patrol are going to make a serious attempt to make DPReview sustainable for the long term.
Even if it proves to be unsuccessful, DPReview will be around at least for the short term.
It is clear to me that DPRevived is sinking fast at the moment and so "urgent" action needs to be taken by Bob and his team if DPRevived is going to survive at least whatever DPReview's short term life span might be if it doesn't survive long term.
I see today on the Users page here that the 50th ranked user has posted only 14 times in the last 30 days. Just a couple of months ago the 50th ranked user was posting 30-32 posts in the last 30 days - that's ~1 post per day. That is a very clear sign users are leaving and/or cutting back participation at a large rate.
In any case, it all sounds encouraging for DPReview, according to the Gear Patrol's CEO's letter, and time will tell if DPReview will survive in the long term but having an enthusiast photographer as the driver behind it is a very good start.
Someone has been sharing their DPReview account with me for a while now and so I will be staying there from hereonπ.
Good luck to DPRevived but it is very clear to me that it is sinking fast at the moment and I doubt the forum "model" Bob and his team have chosen is sustainable in the long term.
I have put on my floaties and am abandoning ship.
Adios DPRevived πππ and good luck for the future.
We do have plans to make this site a little more unique. However, things have been delayed due to Bob being quite ill and Martin having real work to do. I did explain above what we are going to aim at and these plans are progressing.
If anyone wishes to home themselves at DPReview, that's fine. We are not trying to compete with them - as evidenced (I hope) by the forum re-org recently.
I am hopeful that we will see some changes/updates this month and will also be able to talk in more detail about future plans. But we will always be a 'niche' site compared to DPReview and I don't see that every changing.
While you are there Alan, can you check my permissions because I can only reply using a quote. My "post reply" and starting a thread is greyed out. So I can only reply using a quote to a thread.
the entire discussion history found in a thread is absoljutely valuable, but excessive quotations clog up with noise, so that should be avoided or disabled. In this case I for once use a quotation, but only to be quite precise ad post content.
I can't see anything obvious apart from you are also a beta tester. I could remove you from that and see what happens - but let's talk about that separately, not here. So, PM me.
"I'd subsidize their camera gear, pay their premium subscriptions to some other site, and wish them good luck elsewhere." No sure if Bob had to do that to be rid of you, but either way......................
It would never had gotten so bad here if he taken some of my advice.
As someone who mostly stopped posting here due to his presence, I might actually resume posting here now that I peeked back here and he actually seems to be gone.
Indeed... I feel like DannoB (much like DonaldB) would have some real value as members (with unique perspectives and strong opinions, which aren't a problem as long as people are at least somewhat civil in their interactions), if they truly wanted this place to be a success and something unique, but it seems like that was not too high on their priority list anyway.
What I'm really sad about is that people like Jim Kasson and Iliah Borg seem to have stopped posting here completely.
