This weekly thread is principally intended for you to show others the photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. BUT all brands of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your photos.

New contributors to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we hope that all will join in and comment on others' photos.

    ==========================================================================================

Many thanks to Digirame for taking over in my absence. His useful and friendly comments are excellent, as are those from the rest of you!
I have added a few comments of my own on last week's thread. But you all posted lots of great photos and comments, and more pages of them that usual.

    Welcome to JACS!

In Europe the clocks go back tonight -- next weekend for the USA.

I look forward to seeing some Halloween-themed photos this week. And those of you in the UK should start practising taking low light photos in preparation for the 5th November bonfires and fireworks in a week's time! If you have a tripod and can set an exposure of several seconds, you can capture several fireworks on the same frame. The exposure needs to be reduced to preserve the black skies. Alternatively, practice combining several shots in one by means of Photoshop, or whatever you use.

Please check out this thread and plan on participating if you can. We are one of the groups on the site with the best participation, and we should put our views and needs known for the development of DPRevived.

    Enjoy the Fall and Halloween!

    David,

Tell us about the bonfires and fireworks. Is that a tradition in Great Britain? What does it signify?

I was reading an article just last night from a guy who uses bulb mode and a 30 second exposure time and a black baseball cap.

He covers the lens when the fireworks are set off, to eliminate the trail going up in the sky, and uncovers the lens just as it explodes.

He leaves it open for about 5 seconds and then covers it back up again. He can capture about 4 or 5 explosions in one shot.

I have never tried that, but it intrigued me when I read it.

    The guy's technique sounds good.

You can read about another "guy" here:

    and more here:

The last photo in the first link has a boy (second from right) that looks like I used to look!

Kids are not as free today to roam and do what they want, but back then (1950s) they used to make a rag doll effigy of Guy Fawkes and push it through the streets in a barrow or an old perambulator, asking grown ups for "A penny for the Guy!" People would respond if they thought the doll looked realistic enough (sometimes it looked like a despised politician). This doll was put on top of the bonfire. The bonfire was usually built in the street and made from anything that would burn. Some were quite high. On 5th Nov all, including adults, would gather and set light to the bonfire. Mothers would make "parkin", which was a sweet cake with ginger in it.

Fireworks could be bought for as little as a penny -- "a penny banger" -- and were obtainable at newsagents and other local shops. Of course, they were quite dangerous and children (always boys) would sometimes have bad injuries if they were not prudent. You lit the blue touchpaper and were supposed to "retire". Most accidents were cause by people getting impatient waiting for the firework to go off. There were many varieties apart from bangers: Catherine Wheels, Roman Candles, Jumping Jacks, etc.

The laws in the UK have been tightened greatly since I was a child, bonfires are much more closely supervised, and fireworks are not available to those under 18. Thus Bonfire Night is not as exciting (or dangerous) as it used to be. Most fireworks today seem to be of the kind that are set off by professionals and just shoot up into the air, all exploding there with the same pattern, just different colours.

Yes, there were "rockets". These were fireworks attached to a stick that you put in a milk bottle. They would go up, as you can imagine, and sometimes produced a good display. But they were notoriously unreliable. One would find the remains of rockets in neighbouring streets the next day (what goes up has to come down).

    David,

Thanks. You led me to learn about "Bonfire Night", Guy Fawkes, The Gunpowder Plot, Catholic/Protestant tensions, York, and more.

    Interesting stuff.

Fond, fond memories from the days around "cracker night" as we called it, although I am talking 1970's not '50's. We had a thrupenny banger that was a rather destructive device in our naughty little hands - think old wooden letter boxes turned into bird feeders, paint tins into soccer balls. If we could blow it up we did. Fireworks are banned now in most states here in Australia.

apologies David as I did not post anything about Halloween as it's not as big here as it is in some other countries.

A fellow Australian (Brian) has posted his thoughts on cracker night which pretty much mimic my experiences.

But I'll post some Halloween pics from a friend's son's birthday a year ago...

    Mocha,

It does look like you had good weather. It's the same here, where there's both rainy and clear weather days. Wow...the butterfly and the Moorhen are super. I like seeing your fungi also; it reminds me to go take some pictures of some but I've been so busy with other things. That's great you did find a halloween jolly fellow.

    Mocha,

I was reading an article the other day. The author's motto was, "Shoot for the light falling on your subject".

The thrust of his article was that in times of high dynamic range, such as cloudy days when the sky is a dull, flat white, eliminate the extraneous, zoom in or move your feet to get closer to your subject, use partial or spot metering and meter off your subject.

I think your butterfly is a good example of this approach.

I'm going to try to take that to heart.

    Paul,

My favorites are the first two, even though B&W are not something I normally like. You just put those together just right. The zebra reflections work really well here and the expression on the cheetah is interesting, like he or she is wondering what you are doing but at the same time does not appear to be afraid. I did not know there were African penguins. That's neat. Was the picture with the ocean taken in South Africa? That's beautiful with the clouds on the nearby mountains. Your bird closeups are fantastic. I like seeing the colorful painted houses. Wow...catching a whale breaching is something hard to do, at least when I've tried to capture whales along the coast of Oregon. That's a pretty view of a winery with the red flowers.

    Subject: Halloween at Roloff Farms

Roloff Farms is a family farm in Oregon where Little People, Big World was filmed. Every year they open up the farm during the Halloween season. They have one exhibit that I'll show that makes it challenging for the photographer in low light. I hope you like this series.

Photo No. 1 - We begin this series by walking through here at the entrance. What spooky things will we find?

No halloween photos from me, There aren't many halloween things to spot in our region.

There are already many nice photos in this threads.
Mocha's Autumn sun is just one of the many beautiful photos.
Also Fotoword's zebra's is one I would like to mention as those are among my favorites.

The weather hasn't been great, lots of rain lately, but we found a moment with some nice weather today for a short hike.
And I have to mention I couldn't resist, my G.A.S has added a new lens to our collection....
