This weekly thread is principally intended for you to show others the photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. BUT all brands of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your photos.

New contributors to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

It seems that at least one person who posts in another thread objects to members editing his photos for the purpose of illustrating suggestions. If you prefer that your photos not be used in that way, please just say so, and we will respect your request.

    ====================
    THIS PAST WEEK

Digirame showed us a plethora of photos taken at a local Oregon airshow. Some remarkable shots of skillful acrobatics, skillfully captured. Also beautiful pink flowers.

Steve T is gaining experience with long exposures by means of ND filters. we are all learning alongside him. His "study in red" would have been even more impressive if the uploaded files had been larger.

Mocha was by the River Goyt and caught some excellent shots of exotically coloured birds and funghi. He was the only one to come up with bonfire night fireworks -- thanks!

I went out for a walk in the dull weather and discovered two roses in excellent shape close to the back door. The roadworks here are still ongoing!

Photobygms found a seagull that has brown feathers -- I never saw one like it. The bird was absorbed in figuring out what to do with an appple core. His dragonfly was lovely. Where do they go in the winter? Proving that it is not a sin to use ISO 12800, he captured two graceful deer very beautifully.

Opencube's experiments in reworking colours imaginatively continue to cause us to "double take".

Simplejoy never fails to find a new twist on an everyday object!

Keep 'em coming, guys -- both the photos and the helpful comments!

And please feel free to enter your best shots in the Photo of the Week competition.

Thanks! I usually base mine on 2000p, and it doesnt seem to eat up my allowance too much.

I usually downsize my photos for three reasons:

    1) Posting. Not all of us are on dedicated internet lines and must depend (ike me) on WiFi hotspots. I get my internet from my provider over WiFi

    2) Receiving. Not all of us are on dedicated internet lines and must depend (ike me) on WiFi hotspots. Larger files take forever to load. 800X600 are also easier to view on mobile devices like phones.

    3) Storage space on the server.

    Subject: El Tigre Festival

In early October I went to a El Tigre (The Tiger) festival in Tigard, Oregon. I was able to capture these beautiful colors. It was unfortunate that speakers (I think those are speakers) blocked some of the views, but they still looked nice. I hope you like them.

That was a Juvenile European herring gull in first winter plumage, so it only just flew out so to say😋

    Steve,

Thanks. I do like Canon colors. They look good even in dark conditions like I had here where I had to use higher ISO levels.

Starlings are some of my favourite birds. In the UK they're getting scarcer, but one can still see their impressive murmurations in Winter.

Festivals and birds, always good opportunities to shoot nice pictures. 👍

We had again a break in the weather, so a perfect moment for a short hike again.
We visited the Terhorsterzand area and did enjoy the hike.
The sun did try to break the fog and low hanging clouds but not very successful.
We both went with minimal gear today, only our Eos R and RP and both our RF 24-240's were in our backpacks.

    Dunlin,

When they fly over by the hundreds of thousands, they blot out the sun and you have to shout to be heard.
It's definitely a force of nature.

    Hi all
Some big cat pics from Kruger National Park South Africa from our recent trip there.

    Leopard
We did 7 safari drives in total, roughly 3 hours each. One early in the mornings and one later in the afternoons.
We stayed at 2 locations, Simbavati which was a private reserve and the other outside Kruger.

My wife and I had done a single safari drive in India back in 2011but did not see any tigers or leopards. We did another in Sri Lanka but again no leopards.
Even in Simbavati we were unfortunate not to see any leopards as others on our drive had seen one a day or so before we got there.
Still no luck at Kruger but on our last drive there as we were leaving, our guide stopped to speak to another guide who was incoming and he told our guide that a leopard had been seen about 500 yards/metres down the road. So we did a u-turn and our guide found the leopard. I have absolutely no idea how he found it!! It was about 50 metres from the road virtually covered by the branches that were quite thick.
To my naked eye, it was invisible and it took me about 10 minutes of searching just to make it out!
Autofocus of the Canon R8 was impossible in this situation, and I tried a few different method but in the end had to focus my Tamron 100-400 manually so, this was the best shot I managed.
Still, extremely happy that we got to see one!

    IMG_8200.jpg

    Cheetah
This was back in Simbavati and we were fortunate to see one as it hadn't been around since May (and this was October(.
In the private reserves the guides can get very close to the animals so it was much easier to get some photos.

    IMG_5405.jpg

    Lion
    In Kruger
This was the only lion that we got to see with the naked eye (the other was in a cave up in a mountain) and although the view was unobstructed it was still at a distance. You are not allowed to go off-road (up to the animals) in Kruger.

    IMG_7363_DxO.jpg

The whole trip was amazing and a lot of fun even though the private reserve drives in uncovered vehicles can be jarring as we went off-road.
The guides provided thick, felt-lined ponchos for the mornings that gave us some comfort from the cold and the wind (and rain on one drive) in the open vehicle.
The vehicle needs to be open to go off-road to get under all the trees etc

The Kruger vehicle was comparative luxury being enclosed with a roof and some glass panels.

    Thanks
    Paul
