This weekly thread is principally intended for you to show others the photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. BUT, because you may have the opportunity of taking an outstanding picture when you do not have a Canon camera with you, all brands of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your photos.

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we hope that all will join in and comment on others' photos. As I am sure we all see it, this is more about community building and sharing than showing off. The response over the first six weeks has been most encouraging.

It's hot where we live (Netherlands) to hot actually with temperatures close to 30c
But a short hike in the forest with some shade is still enjoyable.
Wanted to test my old EF 24-70 F/2.8 mkI and while it still does perform like it should, I can't keep thinking to get the newer mkII version.
(still shoot with analog Canon Eos gear so EF mount is still perfect for me)
But for now a few with the ol' MkI 😁

We had a tiny visitor to the yard today. This little grey squirrel was picking up the discarded sunflower seeds that were dropped by the birds at our feeder.
To give some indication of size the spruce cone he’s sitting beside is about two inches long.IMG_6298w.jpegIMG_6300w.jpegIMG_6301w.jpeg

This was June mre than a decade ago but they had a good snow winter, as they have had this last year ... and the rivers were full ..

I hope you don't mind a tourist stopping by ...... I started digital photography, and I believe the first Canon cameras I had, with these A series point and shoots.... I still have an S90 and may take it out again for nostalgia sake ...

    WhyNot,

    Ah yes. Love the elk.

I have a fond memory of being stopped in the road, watching a herd of elk emerge from the fog and pass in front of my car, hoping and praying they didn't jump on my hood.

Thanks for these nice photos, Why Not. Please dont wait to be invited: you, and anyone else, are welcome to contribute to these „open to all“ threads at any time!

I just wonder why there dont seem to be more Canon users here, given the popularity of the make. But all are welcome, particularly when they start coversations with the rest of us.

Personally, I welcome others telling me how I can take better photos of more interesting subjects! 😀 And I sense that I am not alone in this.

As some of you know, I like to limit myself to making the best of whatever lens I happen to have with me: it is a good learning experience. So, on Friday, I went out determined to use the RF 50mm lens as much as possible. I also took the RF 24-240mm. I should explain that I have rarely been satisfied with the 50mm focal length, as it is hard for me to compose what I see with it.

First I stopped by the cafe in the house on Praterstrasse where Johann Strauss is said to have composed his Blue Danube Waltz.

    IMG_6006_DxO-b1.jpg

The City of Vienna has also placed one of their plaques that indicate landmarks.

    IMG_6008_DxO-b.jpg

Just up the street, there is another interesting building, in Venetian style:

    IMG_6003_DxO-1.jpg

and next door, the house where two famous people were born. Most people have heard of the movies Gone with the Wind and Casablanca, even if they do not know the name of the composer of the music, but I must confess that the works of Stanislaw Wispianski are unknown to me.

    IMG_6000_DxO-a1.jpg

So far, I managed with the 50mm, but on the other side of Praterstrasse is the Church of St. Johannes Nepomuk. It is not enormous, but too big to be encompassed by the 50mm from the other side of the street. Even at 24mm, I am not happy with this shot.

    IMG_6009_DxO-b.jpg

About twenty minutes later, in the centre of the city, on Kärntnerstrasse, I found something that, by backing up as far as possible I can take in with the 50mm. For many decades this was the HMV Shop, the most comprehensive record store in Vienna. I suppose its high prices and high rents caused this shop to close about two years ago. It was then replaced by one selling traditional Austrian clothes (Tracht and Dirndl); but that didnt last very long, and has itself been replaced by:

    IMG_6017_DxO-a.jpg

Then I tried to take some interesting steet views with the 50mm. My first attempt:

    IMG_6018_DxO-b.jpg

Perhaps better in portrait mode, though still not giving a real idea of the locale:

    IMG_6019_DxO-b.jpg

The nearby church is also too big for this lens to capture:

    IMG_6020_DxO-copy-b.jpg

This is closer to what I was seeking, but still not totally satisfactory:

    IMG_6021_DxO-b.jpg

I tried to give an impression of what the Burger King is like inside. The ceiling, which is only partly visible in this shot, is quite outstanding:

    IMG_6015_DxO-1-copy-a.jpg

I will try to take better photos of this eatery, one day.

My prejudices against the 50mm lens have unfortunately been confirmed. I conclude that the RF 24-240mm is the most versatile lens for the city. I have had excellent photos with this lens, only limited by its f/4 - f/5.6 maximum aperture. But I shall try to see if I can do better with my 35mm and 16mm lenses next time I venture out!

The 50 mm is an "odd" lens in a way and not often used by most, but I do own multple versions the and they do get used, but often it's just for the challenge of not using or take a lot of our lenses with us, We can choose from the oldest EF version (aka coffee grinder) and the STM version, the EF 1.2 USM and the RF 1.8.
Have to agree with the 24-240 a very nice and good performing lens, We own one copy and we might get another copy when we want to hike light with one camera per person only.
EDIT: Its actually not a 5.6 at the long end but 6.3

But those photos do give a very nice impression of Wien😎
I never have been in Wien, I have spend a lot of time in Imst, and know the region (Inntall-Otztal-Pitztal-Kaunertal) and do miss it

Thanks for your kind comments. Yes, you are correct: f/4-6.3. And it is less of a limitation now I have PhotoLab for noise reduction when needed.

Thank you David for your kind comments....

Not sure why there are not more Canon shooters here .. back when I decided to move from those A series cameras I looked hard at the entry level models from Canon (and from Nikon) that were readily available locally in those days …. but they really didn't “fit” my hand …. I liked the idea of the mirrorless Panasonic G1 but it was model 1.0 and I try to avoid those and ended up listening to the enthusiasm of Olympus uses over on that DPR forum … I'm still happy with my choice but had a couple months of GAS when the 7D (I think it was) came out with that second sensor for AF... would have been great ( and probably was) for birds back in those days ..

Sorry I never give advise only conversation …. or maybe stream of consciousness …..

I'll look through the files for something interesting taken with Canon or maybe take the S90 out and about for walk ...

I guess when I walk about the city I try to work to a narrative that I will include with the pictures when I post them and hope that they hold together … I think your pictures are good and work well .... and I would just stick to the narrative …

Looking at these and where you are standing I think you might prefer a wide angle lens. I tend to use the equivalent of the 24mm (or 20mm particular if I'm going to spend any time indoors.) or a pancake equivalent of 40mm. At night I will often take the equivalent of a 60mm lens because that lens manually focuses easier when the lights will often fool the AF and I tend to be further back at night .. The only problem with the wide angle is that I need to shoot to crop, leaving enough room to do some perspective correction in post …. When I'm not doing any street candids and staying outdoors I will often use a zoom lens – 24-120 or a smaller 24-70 equivalent – which is more versatile … and again always trying to work to a narrative … A bit of stream of consciousness – no advise ….
